WASHINGTON — A different kind of gridlock is headed to a key section of the nation’s capital.
DC Councilman Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) on Sunday warned his constituents in the Navy Yard area to brace for “major congestion” starting Monday, when thousands of naval employees begin returning to in-person work there.
“Requiring all in-person work without helping agencies plan = mess,” Allen wrote on X. “16,000+ employees all report in person. Expecting 8-10,000 cars, but have 4,473 parking spots.
“Avoid area if you can.”
Allen cited data from a memo he apparently received, though it’s not entirely clear from where it came.
President Trump, during his first day back in the White House, issued a memorandum demanding the heads of government agencies return their employees to in-person work “as soon as practicable.”
The Navy Yard, which is famous for its bustling nightlife scene, the Nationals Park baseball stadium and waterfront esplanades, is also home to the Washington Navy Yard administrative center for the US Navy.
Last week, Navy officials confirmed that about 17,000 employees at Washington Navy Yard were expected to return to in-person work starting Monday and warned that its parking options had been filled to capacity.
“By preparing in advance and working together, we can navigate the challenges ahead,” Capt. Ryan Gaul, commanding officer of NSA Washington, said in a statement. “Let’s all plan ahead, demonstrate patience and understanding, and support one another to ensure a successful start to the workweek."

Give them buckets of brushes and paint to work on some ships.
Yup.
Well what did y'all do in 2015? 2010? Sheesh, DC has been a mess for decades.
If nothing else this is a good reason to distribute government offices across the country - but then they whine about that.
Several Navy commands are in the DC area. One off the top of my head Naval Sea System Command, Chief of Naval Operations command. Those in Crystal City Arlington, VA. There’s more but those two popped into my head.
Oh, no, now the Metro people will have to show, too.
and with snow due on Tuesday...
Hey geniuses, they did that before the Covid scamdemic and the world didn’t end.
Uh, so what did they all do before Biden said they could work from home?
Right.
Because it is literally a ghost town in DC especially Capitol Hill.
what in the heck did they do when they had to go in to work in the first place ?
The Navy Yard has a Metro station.
Ummmmm, they were all working there before without issue. Metro stop is right there. What did the Councilman do? Pocket the sidewalks. Did he put all the streets in his living room. Did aliens EAT the space?
8-10,000 cars.
4,473 parking spots.
Is that the same Navy that has more admirals than ships?
Waiting for the military branch of DOGE in 4,3,2,1,........ Not so much to reduce the headcount, but that is a lot of Navy people in one place. Especially one that does not float.
“Where did they park on March 14, 2020?”
Darn good question. I guess they forgot about that.
They rode the train and other public transit and they carpooled.
They will eventually work it out.
It will get much better after the cut backs.
Maybe when they start paying attention spend more time working instead of playing grab ass with DEI and other crap and don’t have such a parking problems they will be able to build ships on time and on budget again. Do you think?
That’s the secret. They’ve been hiring steadily since 2020. All remote. Now the roosters are coming home to lay eggs!
DoD is still hiring. I posted an opening last week.
I don’t see the problem. What was it like before the scamdemic and they were sent home? I’d say their returning to work will create back to normal traffic patterns. If they had places to park prior to the scamdemic, I’m certain they can find places now.
Allen needs to take some cheese with his whine, it should mellow him out.
They work one day every two years, and they probably get travel pay to go to the polls.
Tens of thousands of people used to commute in and out of DC, and they never thought it a problem.
