A science teacher at a Florida middle school is facing deportation after being detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials amid President Trump's crackdown on illegal migrants.
The teacher, who has not been identified, works for the Miami-Dade Public Schools and was detained at an immigration hearing, after having lived in the United States since childhood, NBC Miami reported.
The educator is a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient.
DACA is a temporary program that delays the deportation of undocumented immigrants who came to the country before the age of 16. Those in the program are allowed to work and obtain a social security number and a drivers license.
The public school district confirmed that it complied with all federal guidelines after Thursday's detainment, adding that all employees are authorized to work upon hire.
Karla Hernández-Mats, president of United Teachers of Dade union, told the Miami New Times that the teacher was 'trying to do the right thing' by attending his immigration hearings.
The situation was jolting for both staff and students within the district as it has a large population of immigrant students.
'It's really shocking to kids, and I'm sure they are talking about it with their parents and that's created an even greater level of anxiety for that population of students,' Hernández-Mats said.

Bongino rule alert
There must be a reason for arresting this particular DACA that has nothing to do with being a teacher. I’ll wait before reacting to the story.
Meaning he’s had many years to go back home and do it the right way but didn’t bother to
“’It’s really shocking to kids, and I’m sure they are talking about it with their parents and that’s created an even greater level of anxiety for that population of students,’ Hernández-Mats said.”
I’m not seeing the problem.

“an even greater level of anxiety” = WIN!
Just self deport ands set your minds at ease.
Good catch.
If someone can obtain all the benefits of American citizenship without actually having to commit to becoming a citizen, then why not? /sarc
I figured the press is hunting for sad sob stories like this. Was this fellow pursuing legal status?
Look at the words: “Deferred Action” Deferred until when? We now know: Until now.
According to law, these people were to be returned, only President Obama decided not to enforce the law, claiming he was “deferring” action.
Trump 45 indicated he would go along with legislation that addressed the DACA kids (many of whom are now adults), along with other reforms to immigration, in a package acceptable to both Rs and Ds. The Democrats thought, instead, to wait Trump out.
Trump 47 isn’t playing that game any more. He’s a man on a mission.
I suppose anytime the Democrats want to revisit immigration reform in a way that can fetch both Republican and Democrat support, Trump will consider the matter once the legislation is on his desk. But, he’s not waiting.
Trump has certain priorities, mainly ending birthright citizenship by law (and not merely by an executive action), tightening up “family unification” and moving to merit-based legal immigration. But, he’s not waiting for the Congress. Every day, trains are leaving the station. Soon, there won’t be any DACA adults. Then, there won’t be any DACA kids.
Soon, regardless of how the Supreme Court rules on Trump’s ending birthright citizenship by executive order, Trump will end them being anchor babies for their illegal parent(s)/guardian(s). Adios, wada’an and bàibài.
Soon, regardless of immigration reform, we’ll be deporting, order of priority: (a) the criminal illegal aliens, (b) the welfare-recipient illegal aliens, and (c) all the other illegal aliens. Possibly we get this done before the Senate completes its confirmation process for Trump’s nominees for positions requiring Senate approval.
And, soon, we’ll be sending persons here due to their being refugees under our law, to detention centers (if they don’t have sponsors who pick up the tab), rather than to welfare centers. Possibly to new GITMOs on Greenland, if we buy that largely empty island from Denmark.
BTW I suspect this DACA adult was targeted by INS for a suspected criminal offense, as we’re currently on priority (a).
I’ll be A LOT that there is more to this story
Either someone going out of their way to grab him to give ammo to the other side OR this person committed ANOTHER crime on top of the crime of illegally coming here.
Truth is, that crime is enough to be deported.
Either way, nothing wrong was done by our side.
But I’d still bet heavily that something is missing from the story.
DACA is illegal. They all knew this
Illegal is a criminal. They all need to go home. No other country in the world puts up with illegals, well, until Europe went insane.
Get OUT! Hahahaha. These criminals have infiltrated almost everywhere. The children who witnessed this learned an important lesson” Do NOT be a criminal.
Great post, thank you.
