AI answer:

If you're wondering about the legitimacy of purchasing a Windows key through Groupon, consider the following points:

  1. Third-Party Sellers: Groupon often features deals from third-party sellers, which can vary in reliability.
  2. Price Comparison: If the price seems significantly lower than the official Microsoft store, it may raise red flags.
  3. User Reviews: Check reviews and ratings of the specific Groupon deal to gauge customer experiences.
  4. Activation Issues: Some users report activation problems with keys purchased from discount sites.
  5. Refund Policy: Review Groupon's refund policy in case the key does not work as promised.
  6. Official Sources: For guaranteed legitimacy, consider purchasing directly from Microsoft or authorized retailers.
  7. Key Type: Ensure you understand whether the key is for a full version, upgrade, or OEM version.
  8. Support Availability: Check if the seller offers customer support for activation issues.
  9. Terms of Service: Read the terms of service for any restrictions on the use of the key.
  10. Risk Assessment: Weigh the potential savings against the risk of purchasing a possibly invalid key.

I don't know this, but I'd be willing to bet (and would be fascinated to know) that the number of machines - metal and VM - running all versions of Linux (minus Android) exceeds the number of machines - metal and VM - running all versions of Windows including Windows Server. I doubt it's possible to ever count reliably, since a huge number of machines are invisible behind corporate and AWS/Azure firewalls. But it does make me wonder..

There are more stats at the https://www.coolest-gadgets.com/linux-statistics/ site. The only substantial platform where Windows dominates is the desktop. Yet I have little doubt that a version of Linux could be created that would both be easy to use yet vastly more efficient than Windows or any Linux version I have tried.

What I would want in a Linux (and which I can enable in Windows) desktop includes:

Shortcuts to locations and programs/applications that enable easily finding and navigating to the source of via right click.

A default "start menu," even maybe via right click anywhere on the desktop, that provides a compact expanding (each sub menu nested) menu with all programs listed. which you can add to via right click on shortcuts.

Likewise a "Send to" (or "Open with) folder in which you can easily place shortcuts to locations and applications you want to send appropriate files to.

A file manager that pops up image view on mouse hover.

A file manager that plays media files on mouse hover.

A more complete list of functions one can reassign keyboard key to via an intuitive menu, including key combinations as making CapsLock function as ctrl+c, and F1 as crtrl+v, middle mouse click as crtrl+x.

The ability to fine-tune the color of each type of folder, and the color and width of borders, such as active and inactive. Maybe close to what the scope and depth that W.9x enabled.

Speech to text software that is as good as money could buy, and which enables a user to programmed it to execute any OS user functions. A desktop file of lists of commands that one can copy and paste and execute functions for.

I only use Windows 11 for my desktops and laptops. I never use my Samsung phone for banking and internet. I finally got a 10” Android tablet. So I will get to see the internet the Fisher-Price way. The clown world way. Experimenting of course.

Yes, as if a full detailed menu is not faster.

Those are some pretty useful functions, indeed. I've got a wish list as well, built up over the years.

As a starting point, I wish for the Classic Windows 2K desktop theme, no XP Fisher-Price, no Vista Aero.... but underneath that desktop, the GNU tools and utilities, and the Linux kernel. I like NTFS at work tied into AD, but at home? Basic ext4 and POSIX rwxrwxrwx do just fine.

I always brain-damage my Windows desktops as far back towards 2K as possible. Windows 7 was the peak of Windows goodness, IMO. Since then I have to install Classic (Open) Shell.

To me the frustrating thing about Linux is that -- IF I took the time -- I could write every feature I want and I'd have my wish list. But I don't have the time, I'm 73 and while I still do some software engineering and coding, as part of my IT dayjob, I get paid for it. Doing it for the lark is in my past. So I'm resigned to living without my "ideal" desktop.

It's okay, I'd rather spend my time playing musical instruments, going outside and marveling at God's magnificent Creation, and giving thanks every day.

Yes, thank God for Classic (Open) Shell. Mint should imitate it. See all apps at once. And Explorer Patcher, and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. Get back what MS took away.

Almost 73 myself, and getting tired quicker. Hands cannot type well. For which customization is basically essential.

I am not into gaming. If someone gave me $300-$400 that I had to spend on a computer, I would buy >>>

Used Dell Optiplex at eBay with Intel UHD 770 graphics and dual DisplayPorts. 770 is the highest for Intel desktop CPUs.

For UHD 770 graphics you need a minimum of the i5-12500 CPU or i5-13500 or i7 from those Intel generations.

32GB RAM
NVMe Drive (I have not bought this Optiplex yet)

****Dell comfort view plus QHD 27” monitor. Best lo-blue light monitor. Its LED backlights are special lo-blue light LEDs. Seriously! I bought this Dell monitor last Christmas

Not into gaming either, and I would be wary of anyone selling "keys..,By the grace of God I built my last two computers, the older one runs Linux Mint, and this one runs Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Retail (cost now $140) which is a result of free upgrades flowing from a W.8 upgrade disk at $28 (with rebate) on the Retail channel, which means it can be removed from one PC and legally installed/activated on another. However, if MS persists on its current trend against 3rd part customization its days may be numbered.

. Go to https://pcpartpicker.com and look for Ryzen 5400G which (G) stands for good integrated graphics. Np need for a card. Add compatible parts, which it will show you. For instance, even with then you have a very capable PC for about $650. But you could reduce that.

One tip, wait for holidays and special sales days- the savings can be significant then. Plan for purchase during Thanksgiving and black Friday especially- spring sales and winter sales often come up too.

I always used to renew my online racing subscription on Thanksgiving, saving alMost $60 in the process. I bought and built a new computer at Christmas, and the savings were in the hundreds of dollars. Saved Almost $300 alone for the 4060 ti video card i beleive (ill have to check it agaisnt the current price, but i think i paid around $500, not the $780 or so it is now).

Your power supply wattage seems a little low- not sure about ryzen processors, maybe they are more efficient than Intel?

The storage also a bit low, but if you don’t do a lot of saving, backups etc, then it is enough I suppose (can’t believe I’m even saying this as in the early 2000’s me and a friend were discussing how much storage we would need, and couldn’t even imagine back then 10 gb of storage let alone a tb or more. 500gb back then would have sounded like way overkill, but now it is on the low end if you do lots of backups, photo work (photos are large files these days), photoshop work, have a collection of games etc.)

500 would be enough if you put os on it and used another nvme for storage, you’d likely never run. Out then (famous last words lol)

I dual boot, so need a larger c drive to get both on, and updated, and all my programs on and photo files etc. I opted for 2tb, probsbly too much, but it’s there incase it is needed in the future.

Of after.

racing subscription

What is a racing subscription?

Almost $300 alone for the 4060 ti video card

The most I ever paid for a video card was about $35 years ago, and now the AMD Ryzen 3200G with integrated graphic CPU I have is fine. I usually run 7 browsers, each generally for its own purpose, with hundreds of tabs (and 128GB RAM) and 3 word pros with multiple documents, most quite long, plus Bible programs, Thunderbird, and some other apps. I do not need anything more than the graphics I have. That would be a waste of God's money.

Just curious, not sure i understand your comment agout a “waste of God’s money”

is buying a $20,000 car, or even a $10,000 second hand car a “waste of God’s money” when you could buy a $500 junker that barely runs but gets you where you need to go “fairly reliably”?

Solomon correctly states that enjoyment is a gift from God who gives us strength to work and earn money to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We don’t have to buy the $500 junker vehicle thinking that anything more expensive is a “waste of God’s money”

“So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a person under the sun except to eat, drink, and be joyful, and this will stand by him in his labor throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 8:15).

I suppose if you don’t need more, and are content with what you have, fine, but to state that anything more would be a waste appears to imply that anyone who buys more expensive cards, more than they need, (ie opting for the $20,000 car when a $500 junker is for sale) are wasting God’s money?

Am I misunderstanding your statement?

Poor analogy: a $20,000 car, or even a $10,000 second hand car versus a $500 junker that barely runs is simply not the same thing as a $300 video card vs. perhaps AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 6-Core 12-Thread Unlocked (3.9 GHz base clock and 4.4 GHz boost clock) Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics 7 for about a third of the price of a $300 dedicated graphics card. Which should more than suffice, or the Ryzen 7 5700G for about 1/2 the price. Unless one insists on engaging in even higher resolution as in gaming. Which itself I consider to be a waste of time. Graphic editing can be a different story, relative to its use.

Meaning living beyond what we need or helps to do the work of God is wasteful. I waste too much time.

As for the thelogy behind it: Solomon correctly states that enjoyment is a gift from God who gives us strength to work and earn money to enjoy the fruits of our labor....

“So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a person under the sun except to eat, drink, and be joyful, and this will stand by him in his labor throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 8:15).

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) That that, in context, is as the natural man reasons, andin the context of the unfairness of life:

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 8:14-15)
But which is only contradicted in consideration of the spiritual dimension and its requirements of self-denial in service to God and others:

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9:23)
And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:25-27)
I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die. Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (1 Corinthians 15:31-33)
And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved. (2 Corinthians 12:15)
Likewise, Solomon wrote:
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity. For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool. Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit. (Ecclesiastes 2:15-17)
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead. For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. (Ecclesiastes 9:3-5)

Which is in clear contradiction in the light of the spiritual aspect, which is progressively revealed.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10)
we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (1 Corinthians 3:13-15)
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6)
But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 8:12)

And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:42)

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (Matthew 25:41)

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (Matthew 25:46)

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. (Luke 16:23-24)

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. (Mark 9:47-48)

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. (Revelation 14:11)
