The State Department said Wednesday that U.S. government vessels can now transit the Panama Canal without being charged fees.
"The government of Panama has agreed to no longer charge fees for U.S. government vessels to transit the Panama Canal," the department said in a post on X, adding the agreement will save the U.S. government millions of dollars a year.
The Panama Canal Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At least we’re on the winning side. Imagine being a leftoid these days.
I couldn’t imagine that. Common sense has taken over the country. I love hearing the liberal cry and wine about what Trump is doing. They’ve been completely wrong about everything.
I’m running out of room to hold all the winning, and we haven’t finished the first three weeks yet...
why are they highlighting the paltry savings?
last nine years we’ve only paid like 19 millions..... while other country is paying panama 500k per trip.
we should get a cut at the minimum.
that said, there is winning in blocking China’s belt & road from stepping into panama.
Peanut Boy would not be happy.
Well keep in mind its only govt ships, not us commercial ships. Might just be the start of more to come.
Still hetter than anything Biden or Obama ever did.
I’d be curious to know how many U.S. merchant vessels transit the Panama Canal these days. The U.S. hasn’t been a player in international maritime shipping in years.
No fees until Trump leaves office.
I still think we need to take back the Oanama Canal into US hands. They broke tge treaty, we must take it back.
Not satisfied. I want the USS Gerald Ford to cruise up to the mouth of the canal and order all those pygmies off our property.
p
ship fees are mainly symbolic (for both sides....). I think the real goal is force HW out of the ports and panama out of Belt and Road, which they have already announced.
The idea 30 years of HW operation of the ports being undone se quickly is surreal to me. I wonder if there is a side-deal with china on this vis a vis taiwan and south china sea.
there is a lawsuit against the law which gave HW the leases, so I think we can assume the fix is in.
Wonder if the administration made a deal with china on this as well.
Panama DID put a potload of money into expanding the canal for larger ships, and also managing the water supply better*, so, I’d be ok with a reasonable fee if we send through a ship needing the expanded capacity — a carrier, perhaps?
Otherwise, I agree with others here that the main issue is sidelining the Chinese.
*More improvement are needed on the latter. It’d really be the “shits” if we needed to quickly move a task force through the canal, and the water supply was insufficient.
Nimitz/Ford class will not currently fit in even the new locks.
Morning news had it that the report is wrong and US ships will be charged. FWIW
