Trump administration finalizing plans to shutter Education Department

The Trump administration is finalizing plans to dismantle the Education Department through an executive order that would build on the president’s campaign promise to hammer the longtime conservative target.

The order — which President Donald Trump is expected to sign sometime this month, according to a White House official — was expected to lay out a two-part strategy for shuttering the agency, according to two people familiar with the plans and granted anonymity to discuss them.

It would direct the department to craft a plan to wind down its functions using its existing administrative authority. But the order was also expected to call for the agency to inventory a complex set of laws needed to delegate the department’s powers to other agencies and then close the department, an acknowledgment that some of conservatives’ biggest desires for change hinge on congressional approval.

I have no problem with student loans—as long as they are backed by the universities and not the taxpayer.

“Do you want FedGov stripped of Title IX enforcement?“

From what I know about Title IX, yes. Absolutely. Make it go away.

I think Trump has replaced that last stage, acceptance, with bending over. When it comes to Democrats, feigned acceptance while they try to subvert him is too temporary. Getting them to bend over has lasting effects

“Common sense tells me they won’t do that until the secretary is confirmed,” said another person familiar with the discussions

I don't know. It might be easier to defend the position that she'll develop a plan for the elimination of the department by transferring the (few) good parts and eliminating the bad parts than to defend vicious attacks on something she knows nothing about.

“The government does NOT belong in the school loan business.”

No, it doesn’t. However this has to be reformed gradually else it will piss off vast numbers of students and their parents. Its likely to be a huge political s**t s**w. In the meantime some department has to run it.

“The federal department of education should never have had any authority. It should only compile records of state education efforts, and then make recommendations based on success.”

I would think that states are more than capable for their own processes. The fed needs to stay out of it, that’s how we got here to begin with.

Select 3 dudes to work out a BLOCK GRANT scheme directly to local school districts.

Bypass state departments of education.

Voila!

You’re welcome.

What is the u.s. federal government’s department of education spending per K-12 pupil?

ChatGPT said:

ChatGPT

The U.S. federal government, through the Department of Education, spends around $15,000 per K-12 pupil on average. However, this varies by state and district, with local and state governments contributing the majority of funding for public education.

Federal funding typically accounts for a smaller portion of overall K-12 education funding—about 8-10% of the total funding, with the rest coming from state and local governments. The federal contribution includes programs like Title I (for disadvantaged students), special education funding, and grants for various educational initiatives.

The exact number can fluctuate slightly depending on the year, the specific funding programs in place, and other factors.

What is the Tacoma school district’s spending per k-12 pupil?

The Tacoma School District’s spending per K-12 pupil varies from year to year, but the district spends approximately $16,000 to $17,000 per student. This figure includes funding from both local sources (like property taxes), state contributions, and federal aid. However, the exact amount may fluctuate slightly based on the specific budget and any additional funding initiatives for the district.

For the most accurate and current figures, it is best to refer to the Tacoma School District’s budget or financial reports, which are typically published on their official website.

See my #32:

HALF of spending on K-12 is done by the Feds who employ no teachers.

We can DOUBLE the budget of every school district with a block grant.

DO IT!

“Reformers” - this has been going on for a long time.
People have been working on:

Private school vouchers
Charter schools
Rational curricula (phonics, drill and kill math)
Testing and school quality ratings
Teacher qualification exams
Teacher pay tied to productivity
Etc.

Its been going on for 30 years or so, fought mainly in state politics vs the educational establishment.

No its not. I have been analyzing school district budgets for 30 years, it just isn’t so.

Because if you turned the entire spending of the DOE into a block grant, it would appear to approximately double local spending in our very expensive school district.

I don’t see how you figure that.

Also you have to extract the really big chorizo there, which is student loans.
