Google’s Android Lockdown—Why You Need A New Phone In 12 Weeks
Forbes ^ | 1/31/2025 | Zak Doffman

.. . The real story is what’s being done to lock down Android, and why you’ll need a newer model phone in 12-weeks time...

The other highlight further narrows the gap to iPhone, removing some of the looser restrictions that enabled threats to more easily fester on its ecosystem than Apple’s. “The Play Integrity API," Google says, “allows developers to check if their apps have been tampered with or are running in potentially compromised environments, helping them to prevent abuse like fraud, bots, cheating, and data theft.” The company also notes that “apps using Play integrity features are seeing 80% lower usage from unverified and untrusted sources on average,” and that “over 91% of app installs on the Google Play Store now use the latest protections of Android 13 or newer.”

Those last two stats are critical. Because Google’s Play Integrity API is changing, and for the 750-million-plus users on Android 12 or older, you may need to go buy a new phone if you can’t run a newer OS to keep your apps functioning as now. . ..

I’m about a millimeter away from ditching Android and getting a [free] 2 revision-old Apple phone with a switch to Pure Talk.

There is also plenty of evidence showing apple unlocked phones for police without a warrant or outright pulled data off a phone for them.

Apple is only marginally better than android in this department.

If everybody is spied on the spying becomes a tad moot. Dear God, most of the population begs to be on TV. They don’t just want to be spied on, they want as many people as possible to know as much as possible about them...until it involves the deeper secrets.

? “Linux” is not defined outside of the Linux Kernel, the filesystem can have whatever you want....which is what Android is. Android is Linux (kernel) based.

If somebody is referring to “Ubuntu Linux” or “Red Hat Linux”, fine, except I’m not aware of any phone maker that uses such.

Just get an iPhone and use App Store apps only for productivity and entertainment - nothing political. Assume that - just like Google - Apple Intelligence is making a copy of everything you type or say to give to the government of any country where you are located and proceed accordingly.

More likely this is an attempt to ban jailbreaking your phone.

So this old lady can ignore this?

There are two things going on here. First, there is a legit issue with bad apps exploiting your phone, and it needs to be tightened up.

However, Google is doing more than that here. I believe this is an attempt by Google to blacklist jailbroken phones so that Google Play Store apps will refuse to run on them.

The former is fine, but the latter sucks. The Google Android community needs to bitch loudly about taking away the right to own our device and put our own stuff on it.

Apple devices are jailbroken. Android devices are rooted.

Check out the above phones. I don’t think they’re Linxu, but they are very privacy oriented.

I haven’t accessed FR from a desktop or laptop for many years... Do everything on phone now. Only exception is like last night when I watched a concert on laptop.

They wipe all the Googly garbage off the phones, for starters. Go read about them on the website.

I still have a real land line phone, but heard Verizon would be phasing them out.

“Unplugged”. This has interested me for a while. It’s by Erik Prince who helped with Trump’s security. He started Blackwater. https://www.blackwaterusa.com/
