Vanity: Question about Cell Phone Plans

Posted on 01/30/2025 3:18:12 PM PST by Jamestown1630

I am thinking of changing cell phone plans, and have been looking at Pure Talk.

I make very few calls on my cell phone, and maybe a couple of texts a week, both usually from home. I need to have some data, in case I’m out and need to call someone, or a cab, road service, find a map, etc. – but I have almost never used that. I do NO business on the cell phone, and most of our telephone use is VOIP from home.

Frankly, the main thing I use a cell phone for is listening to the radio at home, over the Wifi; and having it for emergencies when I'm away. My husband’s needs are a little greater, but not much greater.

Does anyone here have Pure Talk, and have you been happy with it? We’re also interested to know if the monthly data allowance can be rolled over if you don’t use it, which has always been the case with our TracFone plans.

Thanks for any advice.

Can you bring your own phone? And does your monthly data roll over?

If you can wait -- I don't know how long that might be -- you might get a smoking deal from Boost.

My wife has a plan that runs $100 a year. I have unlimited for $15 a month. Service is good, with very little drop-off. It has a cellphone app, of course, as well as online service.

They also have phone purchase specials that are incredible. My wife recently upgraded her two-year-old A03 to an A15, for FREE!

I got my plan and phone with a phone call, after trying to get the deal advertised at a local store. The local store had closed, and the nearest one was too far to go.

Good luck, and please keep us posted.

We’ve never had a problem with Verizon, and that’s our Internet provider.

We’ve never had a problem with TracFone either; but when Verizon bought TracFone Wireless, we were concerned that the kind of deal we were getting would go away. That was several years ago, and the plan remains the same, so...

The whole issue came up because our phones are old now, and we need to buy new ones; so we thought we’d look into whether a new plan would be better.

“After a total of 18 Caribbean trips, the last one in 2024, the wife and I are giving up on ‘international’ travel. It’s just not worth the hassle.”

If I didn’t know better, I’d think you’re my husband, but incognito.

Several (10-15) Caribbean cruises, the last one December 2024, and we think we’ve given up on international travel. We agree: “It’s just not worth the hassle.”

Communication via cell was 75% of the hassle.

I've been using Pure Talk for the past 4 years back when Rush was advertising it on his show and am very satisfied. I pay $20/month for unlimited talk, text & 3gigs of data(all I need)

Highly recommended, good luck!

I have had Tracfone for years and it runs about $5 per month. I buy phones through QVC/HSN because they usually include the 1200-1500 minutes and 365 service. The minutes roll over as long as the service remains active.

Tracfone is now owned by Verizon and runs on their network.

I got these for my kids:

They’ll connect to the internet, but it’s a smallish screen so... why?

So I bought them unlimited talk/text plans from tello.com that run me about $10 a month.

Tracfone is just for domestic service (unless they are changing), so no surprise there. I like how with Mint I can spend a few bucks for a global “Minternational” plan for a few days at a time as needed, and it’s worked seamlessly.

I pay about 12.00 a month with tracfone. I have used tracfone for 10 years maybe. They have a lot of plans. I don’t use my phone for much. What makes them different is their data and texts roll over, they accumulate. I have thousands of texts and thousands of minutes of data I could never run out.

Ting is $10 a month for phone and text messages.

It's $5 for every GB used on the internet. But, any data used on one's WiFi doesn't count toward the data used.

There are some good options listed in the thread.

I pay $38/month with all taxes, but I get:

- Unlimited text and talk.
- 100 GB High Speed data (5G), high priority, with unlimited 5G beyond 100 GB, but can be reduced priority.
- 60 GB Hot Spot 5G high priority data
- Free roaming in Canada and Mexico
Monthly Hulu
- Some credit toward new phones every two years.

I’m with T-Mobile.

https://www.puretalk.com/

Get your phone’s IMEI number, click the link above, scroll down to “Check Your Phone,” click the green button and follow the steps.

If your phone is compatible with the puretalk network it’ll say so.

The only way that story could be any better is if lightning struck that phone but it still worked.

I have the Moto G Power 5G and TracFone like yourself and am pleased with both. Very impressive for a $119 phone, but do wish it had more than 4 GB RAM. Might have to upgrade to the 2024 model that has 8 GB. I love the stereo speakers.

We started with AMAC-Seniors vs AARP liberals. AMAC gave us a discount when signing up for PURETALK. So I get minimum data usage and seldom turn on my cellphone. It runs around 11.00 /mo.

My wife and I both have Pure talk and are happy with with it. If I recall correctly, it’s veteran-owned.
