ATHENS

US President Donald Trump wants to withdraw 20,000 troops from Europe, Italian media reported on Wednesday.

Trump plans to cut the US troop presence in Europe by about 20%, or 20,000 troops, as part of a review of Washington's commitment to protecting Europe, the state-run ANSA news agency, citing a European diplomatic source.

"Furthermore, for those who remain, he would like a financial contribution from European countries because these soldiers are a deterrent, and the costs cannot be borne only by American taxpayers," the source was quoted as saying by the media outlet.

Europe will never take their defense seriously as long as we stay there.

The leadership hates us anyway, let them try to get their now feminized population to man up for defense.

It sends the proper message. Actions speak louder than words.

Good. Move them to the southern border to man the wall that Trump will complete. We're insane to spend billions defending Europe's borders while refusing to defend our own.

One thing we know for sure: Our POTUS has been a busy boy the last four years. We had no idea — at least I had no idea! He probably started drafting EOs February 2021.

Hard to see any interest by Trump in starting World War 3 over there if he’s pulling out troops.

Also, he’s making it VERY DIFFICULT for European Leaders, they are now being forced to choose between two very tough options - either pay far more to keep any US troops (and also increase military spending), or send their migrants home as they certainly don’t have the money for both. It must be hell for them right now.

The Europeans are soon going to find that their bloated government bureaucrats are not sustainable when they have to increase the size of their military.

Interesting, as it comes from an English-language Turkish media site, reporting an Italian source, which reports an anonymous source. Ah, modern media....

But most interestingly, from the article:

In July 2020, during his first term, Trump announced that the US would withdraw 12,000 troops from Germany in response to Berlin's failure to meet NATO defense spending targets.

In February 2021, President Joe Biden formally suspended the planned withdrawal of US troops from Germany.

Approximately 100,000 US troops from different branches are stationed throughout Europe as of late 2024.

Some interesting details which might not make it to the English-language AMERICAN media....

It will be interesting to see what President Trump ORDERS as Commander-in-Chief. Especially as the Milley sorts are no longer in a chain of command.

One detail more: Trump announced a draw-down in Europe in July 2020, and by February 2021 and the fraudulent ascension of Biden, it had not been acted on. Ergo. the current messes, associated costs and effects are BIDEN's.

More winning, and a message to Zelenskyy demanding American troops to come to his rescue.

Good first step.
We should withdraw all troops from eastern Europe.
And make EU pay costs for all troops stationed in Europe.
Fine with me to withdraw from NATO if needed.
Hell NO to Biden’s,WEF New World Order.

The plus side for us in keeping troops forward deployed is being able to respond quicker to overseas crisis, and the deterrent value. My interpretation of this is Trump negotiating. We may be able to pull back some, but its a bargaining chip. And we cant be taken for granted. Art of the deal.

It will be interesting to see from what countries/bases.
IMHO, there are countries like Italy & Poland that like us Americans and appreciate us being there.
On the other hand there are other places maybe like Germany and Great Briton we do not need to support.

Down to 20,000 would be better.

Let Europe pay for their own defense. WWII and the Cold War are long over. They have more than recovered thanks to US taxpayers.

“Europe” is not just Germany and France.

There are many pro-US leaders in the EU.

The upside of taking out American troops is that this will, as you point out, force EU countries to up their military spending.

The downside is that this will force them to up their military spending. The calls will be for an “EU army” which is creating another rival. That is not good.

well, as a dual-citizen (since 2016) who lives in Poland and has lived here since 2010, Poles definitely would love it to have American troops on Polish soil and even pay for it.

But if I put my Polish citizen’s hat on, I think we in Poland need to step up more and create internal militia like Switzerland. We can keep a focused, professional army, but we should also be spending more on training every single person to fight.

Poland should NOT go back to 1939 and base its defense on someone else joining the war. Poland must be prepared to give the attacker such a bluidy nose (and head and arms and legs) that they don’t even contemplate it.

having a small number of American troops - even 1000 or less American troops is more valid as that DETERRENT.

I honestly have 0 concern for Europe’s ability to actually raise a competent military, imho their culture has degraded to the point where there are not enough actual man of character to be effective. Also the leadership is incapable of understanding the actual us of force beyond bullying a disarmed population.
