Gov. Gavin Newsom faces complex politics, GOP criticism over L.A. fires

LOS ANGELES — Gov. Gavin Newsom has been an omnipresent figure as fires have burned across the nation’s most populous county. He surveyed damage with emergency officials, peppered network and cable television with interviews, and pushed a blizzard of state actions meant to ease the path for victims — often evincing a more moderate approach than his liberal reputation suggests.

For Newsom, the stakes are not only the survival and recovery of his troubled state, but also of his ambitions, including the odds of securing the Democratic nomination for president in 2028.

More broadly for his party, the vast destruction marks the first opportunity for a nationally known Democrat to demonstrate competence to solve issues directly affecting constituents’ lives, rebuffing criticism that was brutally leveled before the November elections in which Republicans gained united control of Washington, in part by luring dissatisfied Democratic voters.

In an ironic twist, Newsom’s success could hinge on the largesse of President-elect Donald Trump, whom he vilified as a danger to democracy and who has been relentless in his criticism as the fires roared, as well as how much federal aid Newsom can wrest from congressional Republicans, some of whom are threatening to place political conditions on any assistance.

For months leading up to the election, Trump and Republicans railed against the leaders of Democratic cities and states, including Newsom, painting California as a bastion of liberal policies and politicians who were unequipped to solve problems such as crime, illegal immigration and homelessness.

A version of that criticism has persisted during the fires, as Republicans, some Democrats and many voters have questioned whether state and city officials did everything they could to prepare for and fight fires that have claimed the lives of more than 20 people and whose economic losses could total between...

Do I read that correctly?

The destruction caused by Newscum's malfeasance is an opportunity for Newscum to demonstrate his competence at solving the problems he created?

We are 40+ billion in the red. We needed resources from 10 states and two countries to fight a fire smaller than some of our worst fires. Management in the state is severely lacking so why would we want this same leadership in DC?

Not to worry, they’ll beat the “CLIMATE CHANGE BLAME THE OIL COMPANIES!” drum loudly enough to block out all the other outrage.

There’s no way Newscum can recover from his blatant, all encompassing ineptitudes.
He basically killed California.

The giveaway is the word “complex”.

Whenever a progressive is caught, absolutely irrefutably, doing something purely, undeniably obviously stupid and destructive, with zero chance to spin a false narrative, the mainstream press calls the situation “complex.”

Implying, where they are incapable of asserting (because all would immediately smell the BS), that deep down, if you study the situation with the proper ideological outlook, and swallow a lot of specious theorizing, it was really defensible at some level.

They like the word "kerfuffle" whenever one of them gets caught with their pants down, too.

His political career is over.

Plus he's a straight white male in the Democratic Party.

They're more likely to go with Gretchen Whitmer, Wes Moore or Mayor Pete in 2028.

Also when there’s a violent mob action, or a shooting in a crowd (which they never call a shooting, it’s the “eruption of gun violence”), they always call it “chaotic”. Not violent, not an attack. Just a condition of complete disorganization. Even when it’s organized.

Maybe we can bring back Joe Pedo after the fires are put out and he can designate these areas as Sacred Indian Grounds National Parks. Charcoal California.
