Elderberry juice may be a potent tool for weight management and enhancing metabolic health, according to a recent study.
A clinical trial found that drinking 12 ounces of elderberry juice daily for a week causes positive changes in the gut microbiome and improves glucose tolerance and fat oxidation.
Elderberry, a small dark purple berry found on elder trees native to Europe, is commonly used as a medicinal plant and supplement to promote immune function.
The researchers tested the effects of elderberry on metabolic health in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial with 18 overweight adults. Participants consumed either elderberry juice or a placebo with similar coloring and taste, while maintaining a standardized diet.
Clinical testing following the intervention showed that participants who consumed elderberry juice had significantly increased amounts of beneficial gut bacteria, including firmicutes and actinobacteria, and decreased amounts of harmful bacteria, such as bacteroidetes. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for nutrient absorption and supports physical and mental health.
In addition to positive microbiota changes, the elderberry intervention resulted in improved metabolism. Results showed that the elderberry juice reduced participants' blood glucose levels by an average of 24%, indicating a significantly improved ability to process sugars following carbohydrate consumption. Results also showed a 9% decrease in insulin levels.
Additionally, results suggested that elderberry juice can enhance the body's ability to burn fat. Participants who received the elderberry juice showed significantly increased fat oxidation, or the breakdown of fatty acids, after a high carbohydrate meal and during exercise.

You can buy this as a concentrate at places like Amazon and reconstitute it to juice.
I wonder which species. We have an elderberry (Sambucus mexicana) that is native to California.
12oz/day is a lot of elderberries.
In other words, eat a healthy diet as much as you can.
Makes good wine too :)
Okay, it’s FR and somebody has to post it..

Hard to draw sweeping conclusions with a remarkably paltry sample size for analysis (n=18).
The Unsweetened Pure Elderberry Juice Concentrate (32 fl. oz.) by FruitFast - Brownwood Acres suggests mixing 1 - 2 tablespoons with a liquid for your daily serving. Is their concentrate equivalent to a 12 oz/day of the juice?
I eat about 1 5 cups of frozen blueberries per day for my anthocyanins. Here’s the comparison:
What is the anthocyanin load for 12 ounces of elderberry juice versus 1.5 cups of frozen blueberries?

The anthocyanin load in foods varies depending on factors such as the specific variety of the fruit and how it is processed. However, I can provide an estimated comparison based on typical values for elderberries and blueberries.
Elderberry Juice (12 ounces): On average, elderberries contain about 1.5 to 2.5 mg of anthocyanins per gram of fresh fruit. For 12 ounces of elderberry juice (about 340 grams), the anthocyanin content would be roughly 510 to 850 mg, assuming the juice is rich in anthocyanins. The amount can vary depending on how concentrated or processed the juice is.
Frozen Blueberries (1.5 cups): 1.5 cups of frozen blueberries is approximately 225 grams. Blueberries typically contain around 1 to 2 mg of anthocyanins per gram of fruit, so for 225 grams, the anthocyanin load would range from about 225 to 450 mg.
Summary:Elderberry juice: 510 to 850 mg of anthocyanins (depending on concentration).Frozen blueberries: 225 to 450 mg of anthocyanins.
Thus, elderberry juice likely has a higher anthocyanin content than frozen blueberries, but the exact amount depends on the concentration and specific variety of both.
I wonder if Elderberry Juice Powder would work the same.
I believe it is 1 Tablespoon for five ounces of juice, for their concentrate.
I’ve heard that consuming raw uncooked elderberries can cause cyanide poisoning. Any truth to that?
If I ate or drank everything that’s good for me I’d be obese and on my way to sudden death.
Why not just state eat whatever you want but do so in moderation and exercise. That’s the key to a healthy life.
Unless it’s made by two nice old ladies in Brooklyn - you may end up in one of the locks in the Panama Canal in that case.
Yes, you can’t eat raw elderberries. They have to be processed.
Both blueberries and elderberries will require netting to keep birds away, but both are easy to grow. You need two different elderberries to cross pollenate. We use paint straining bags to put over the elderberry clusters.
Blueberries are plentiful in the store......elderberry, not so much.
Most blueberry bushes won’t get too big.....Elderberry bushes can get 10 feet high so they need more room.
Blueberries also need acidic soil. We lost 9 blueberry bushes in our alkaline soil before we realized.
Growing up parents made elderberry jam, jelly, juice- it was absolutely, delicious. Every once in awhile you can find it in grocery stores (the jelly) and I’ll pick it up, but not a big jelly jam person anymore, but still like to bring back memories of the homemade jams- can still remember picking the berries which wasn’t easy, but totally worth it
How does Pomegranate juice stack up? I drink about 2-3 ounces of that every night.
BTTT!!!
Summary:12 oz of elderberry juice contains approximately 460–1,420 mg of anthocyanins.12 oz of pomegranate juice contains approximately 180–530 mg of anthocyanins.
Thus, elderberry juice generally has a significantly higher anthocyanin content than pomegranate juice.
