Dozens of US states will endure the lowest temperatures they have felt in years as a polar vortex brings 'life-threatening' cold next week
The National Weather Service (NWS) said that much of the Lower 48 should brace for 'the coldest air-mass of the season to date' from Friday to January 24.
Meteorologists predict temperatures could plunge up to 45 degrees below average, engulfing at least 20 states across the Plains, the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast in below-zero temperatures.
States in the polar vortex path include Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming.
Parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah and Idaho could also experience below-zero temperatures.
Washington DC is set to see highs only in the 20s, moving President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration indoors. The first time this has happened in 40 years.
Wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour will blast through the layers of the hundreds of thousands of MAGA enthusiasts expected to fill the national mall Monday.
'This poses a great risk of hypothermia and frostbite to exposed skin. Have a cold weather survival kit if traveling,' the NWS warned.
The temperatures will also likely freeze and burst pipes and significantly strain power grids as people scramble to heat their homes.
Snow and slippery roads are also set to hit the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Sunday, with a wintery mix potentially in the Deep South early next week.
All states in the Lower 48, and more than 80 percent of its residents, will see below-freezing temperatures.

The last time I caught a Walleye was years ago in the boundary waters in northern Minnesota.
If you look at DC weather, you have Maryland’s weather. Eastern Shore usually a bit different by a few degrees.

Just in time to put the freeze on expected protests...at least in the Eastern states. We may well find out that bringing the Inauguration indoors saves the president’s life...and not just from the cold!

I could not stand living where there are no real seasons. Each of the 4 has its merits. And time flies so fast now that I don’t have a chance to grow tired of any of them.

In my life I have seen -25 F several times here in Indiana; and 73F on a Christmas Eve.
I REALLY dont like cold ,especially below 20F.

Gonna be in 20s overnight on MS Gulf Coast....and just a few weeks ago they were telling us the whole SE was gonna have a heatwave of a Winter....if they can predict 6 weeks out, how can they predict anything - Hell - it was supposed to rain 1/2” overnight here and we didn’t get a drop.
If I could define the seasons, I would have only3 - Summer, Winter, and Change, all defined by temperature. Each would be four months long. The four hottest months start on May 20, and last until September 20. The four coldest months start on November 20 and last until March 20. Change would be divided into two halves, a warm-up, and a cool-down. Cooldown starts September 20 and lasts until November 20. Warm-up starts March 20. and lasts until May 20.

Sinerian air? In Washington, our weather radar shows a High Pressures system circulating off the coast pulling in cold air out of British Columbia.
But Siberian air mass must sound more climate changey and scary.
We’re preparing for the inevitable power outages. I expect to have winter bbq this Tuesday or Wednesday
