Is desalination the future of drought relief in California?

Oct 31, 2015

San Diego is set to soon start supplying itself with millions of gallons a day of fresh, drinkable water, using saltwater from the Pacific Ocean, converted by a brand new desalination plant. As California's historic drought continues, the plant will likely intensify the debate over the role of desalination may play in the state's water supply. Special Correspondent Mike Taibbi reports.

CA has plenty of water flowing down from the Sierras. They let it flow to the sea.

Not when Newsom’s $250,000 donors own all the water...

Exactly.

Desalinization is expensive and energy intensive, totally unnecessary given the multiple of locations throughout California that could be dammed up into reservoirs.

There was a desalinization project going forward in Huntington Beach
Then the infamous costal commission scuttled it

There is abundant untapped water for fire fighting available to the people of Southern California:
  1. All those swimming pools
  2. The Pacific Ocean
The swimming pools are a simple no brainer. The ocean is a simple no brainer for the areas long the coast, and doable, but requiring more infrastructure, for inland.

Desalination is to make it potable. Not necessary for fire fighting purposes. AND...right now...they have scoop and dump planes using ocean water. The wind is one of the biggest problems...maybe empty resevoirs, too.

Disgusting leadership.

California already has 12 desalination plants in use. Unfortunately none near Malibu or Pacific Pallisades.

There is more than enough water under proper management. Newsome closed a dam and is letting all the water run out to the ocean. They also need more firemen and proper maintenance of the firetrucks. I saw a video where many firetrucks were in storage due to not enough money for maintenance. Karen Bass reduced the fire department’s budget and increased the money for illegals.

Desalination is only marginally more expensive than transporting Colorado River water over the mountains to LA.

Probably about 20% more expensive.

Re-build the dams which hail gel Newsom removed. Much cheaper than desalinization.

Dams collect rain & river water instead of let it flow into the ocean. Dams can also generate electric power.

There was a company that spent many millions to put a proposal together for a LARGE desalinization plant. The proposal was unanimously rejected because it would require electricity to run and thereby contribute to Global Warming.

Why they ever thought they had a chance of approval totally alludes me.

Some are still in planning or construction. Some will probably never be completed. I think just 7 are operating and most are too small to really make a difference. The San Diego plant produces more than all the others combined, making 50M GPD. If CA had a dozen plants of this size, and the reservoirs to store the water, we would be doing fine. But CA will NEVER solve its water problem because we vote for idiots like Newsom.

The *drought* is man-made.

Poor decisions on use of the water supply has led to the fiasco that we’re seeing now.
