Humans and mice exposed to long-wavelength red light had lower rates of blood clots that can cause heart attacks, lung damage and strokes, according to research led by surgeon-scientists.
The team exposed mice to 12 hours of either red, blue or white light, followed by 12 hours of darkness, in a 72-hour cycle. They then looked for differences in blood clots between the groups. The mice exposed to red light had nearly five times fewer clots than the mice exposed to blue or white light. Activity, sleep, eating, weight and body temperature remained the same between the groups.
The team also analyzed existing data on more than 10,000 patients who had cataract surgery and received either conventional lenses that transmit the entire visible spectrum of light, or blue light-filtering lenses, which transmit about 50% less blue light. They discovered that cancer patients who received blue light-filtering lenses had lower risk of blood clots compared to their counterparts with conventional lenses. This is especially notable because cancer patients have nine times the risk of blood clots of non-cancer patients.
The recently published study indicates that the optic pathway is key—light wavelength didn't have any impact on blind mice, and shining light directly on blood also didn't cause a change in clotting.
The team observed that red light exposure is associated with less inflammation and activation of the immune system. For example, red light-exposed mice had fewer neutrophil extracellular traps—aptly abbreviated as "NETs"—which are web-like structures made by immune cells to trap invading microorganisms. They also trap platelets, which can lead to clots.
The mice exposed to red light also had increased fatty acid production, which reduces platelet activation. Since platelets are essential to forming clots, this naturally leads to less clot formation.

In humans, blue light filtering helped reduce clotting, seemingly by removing light that encourages clotting.
It seems red lighting, with less or no blue light, reduces clotting.
Soooooo.... either be in rooms on a Navy ship, or head off to the red light district?
What woulda thought?
Red light bump
My lens implants have the blue blocking function. It almost seems standard anymore.
CC
If you want to get a lot of red light naturally, the light at sunrise and sunset is predominately red light. :)
I love broccoli!!
Another reason to ban those bright white and bluish headlights.
Does this mean that wearing rose-colored glasses is good for you?
Some thing has bothered me for awhile in articles like this one. “had nearly five times fewer clots” How can you have 5x fewer; I can understand 1/5 as many, but 5 time fewer? Can someone show me the math to goes along the thought of so many times fewer?
Without proposing a possible biological mechanism for this “phenomenon”, this observation is meaningless. Most likely, published to get more grant money.
I have an infrared long wave length pad. I use it like a heating pad. I love it. Sore and aching muscles, swelling, all respond very positively to it. I’ve had it for two years.
I even wrap it around my head to treat my Miniere’s Disease as it relives the pressure and inflammation in my ear that cause the sudden attacks of vertigo.
Odd side effect though, my hair has gotten thicker and grows a lot faster now. I’m 62 and have a full head of hair that gets me plenty of compliments.
I love my infrared light pad!
Vile weed!
Kenny never hurt anybody.
Where did you get your infrared long wavelength pad?
Amazon.com. I purchased the BestQool 18 inch pad. There are plenty of articles and videos on-line regarding the benefits of the infrared light therapy. I can tell you from my personal experience, it was well worth the money for me.
Thank you! I’ve been interested in red light therapy for quite a while, but couldn’t decide what device I should try.
