The long black wool belted coat – and its white collar jutting not so subtly out from under it – were two pieces from a unique three-way collaboration between house designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, Jun Takahashi of Japanese label Undercover (specializing in streetwear and experimental tailoring) and a group called the Movement for the Emancipation of Poetry, whose members paste lyrical lines on to the walls and monuments of Italian cities.
For this look, I am told, Melania delved into her archives (rather than racing to a designer's door), for the two pieces from Valentino's Fall 2019 collection.
In that show, titled 'Valentino in Love', Piccioli had constructed an illuminated billboard at the end of the runway emblazoned with the words: 'The people you love become ghosts inside of you and like this you keep them alive.'
Audience members found a slim volume of verse on each seat. And it was explained that, with a dash of the 'undercover', Piccioli had selected lines from this special anthology to be hidden inside the clothing so that only the wearer would know what they were hiding and what it said. ... the decision to wear this particular outfit must have had something to do with her the memory of mother, Amalija Knavs.
Amlija's death a year ago to the day of President Carter's state funeral last week was a life-altering moment for the model turned political consort.

That’s pretty wild. But if true, very cool. Melania rocks.
Melania’s taste in fashion designer clothes is very haute couture. I’m not sure that was quite the outfit fitting for a funeral, but still.
She has class.
“Melania rocks.”

She absolutely does. IIRC, at the 2016 Republican Convention, in the midst of the Trump “I just grab ‘em by the pu$$y” scandal, Melania wore a dress accented with an oversized bow, known in the fashion industry as a “pussy” bow.
So subtle, so classy, so devastatingly funny.
“political consort”?
How about “First Lady”?
I love her too, dear Mairdie.
I find myself bristling at the slightest hint of snark from these “journalists”.
That bugged me, too, ltos. Can you imagine them using that term for a Democrat first lady?
Stay warm and pet your pup for me. Our two are fine.
I’ve had a bed cold (flu?) for the last few days and had to cancel lessons.
Tippy is delighted to have me home all day. :-)
a BAD cold. Not a “bed” cold. LOL.
Very sorry about you being sick. Pups are comforts at such a time. Even if you don’t have a 3 Dog Night, Tippy is probably a great portable hot water bottle.
I thought her outfit was lovely and it was fine for the service. Reading about the “hidden message” was very interesting.
The media has always been harsh, rude, & snippy about Melania, and it has to hurt her feelings at least a bit.
There have been several fashion faux pas by other first ladies that went totally ignored by press sycophants. (Michelle O. exiting AF1 in wrinkled, sloppy shorts and tank top under an open blouse, choosing flowing light-weight dresses in windy conditions — “Dr.” Jill in black open-weave stockings and too-short skirt and multiple garish floral prints). Very obvious bias!
