The South has experienced some pretty abnormal weather in the past few weeks, including snow, ice, and other winter weather that we're just not used to. Some people may say we're overreacting for cancelling school and closing roads because of a few inches of snow, but we really aren't crazy. Here's seven reasons why you shouldn't judge Southerners for freaking out about snow.

1. We literally never get snow in the South

My son moved from Maryland to Colorado Springs today. My other son drove with him to help move.

They said the last 60 miles were white out with 15 foot visibility.

They said it matter of factly. My other son is a professional trucker. Bad weather driving is called business as usual.

“give yourself about three times the stopping distance.”

True.

Time = Distance

Time needs to be conserved....

I live in north central Texas, and have for the past ten years. So far today I have received 4.75 inches of snow. It is still snowing and expected to continue until after midnight. It is beautiful and wonderful. But then, I don’t have to go anywhere. Don’t own a snow shovel. In the past ten years this is by far the biggest snow. Only about 2 other times that I remember having snow accumulate on the ground. Winter typically has been 1-3 days of light flurries at most.

Not freaked out at all!

My dad told me about an ice storm that hit Dallas back in the early 60’s. The highway dept was sent to dump sand on the overpasses. Well, they did but didn’t spread it. So the drivers had to deal with icy bridges with large piles of sand in the way.

Slow speed and stopping distance is your friend.

I don’t have snow tires and I’m neighbour’s with Nanook of the North.

Drive 8-10 miles below the speed limit and give yourselves about three times the stopping distance.

This snow would have been in about 1960. I’m really old. 😆

10. Only a few people in the south attend the “high church” style churches. Some of our more evangelical Pentecostal or Independent churches, though 80% or more white, have black-style church music that we hate to miss if the snow keeps us from attending.

Meanwhile, people in snowy regions ignore the snow after the first couple of storms.

Not a useful tool when Texas is receiving sleet today.

It’s always OK to laugh at and make good natured fun of people! Always! It is essential to being an adult!

Don’t let them kid you. Northerners don’t drive well in the snow either. Hell is not a furnace. Hell is a blizzard. Snow is the devil’s punishment. Snow is evil. Life is much better when living in a place where it doesn’t snow.

We had a horrible blizzard in 1993 ... in Birmingham, Alabama. 13-20 inches of snow. We thought our weatherman was crazy for predicting 5 or 6 inches of snow...in March...after the dogwoods had been blooming and we were experiencing highs in the 70's.

Us Gen X'ers and older haven't forgotten it and think about 1993 every time there's a forecast of snow flurries. LOL

Reason number 1.

Southerners don’t freak out about f-ing snow.

Getting excited about it because it is a rare occurrence isn’t freaking out. It’s more of a celebration than anything. Buying milk and bread isn’t panic, it’s experience. If you know snow is coming, and you know you are low on milk and bread, you know there’s a good possibility that the bread and milk trucks won’t make it to the grocery store to restock...if it opens at all. If you don’t stock up before hand, you might well be without milk and bread (and other essentials) for four or five days or more. It’s not panic, it’s common sense.

Which is more than I can say for the title of this article.

In the north, it usually is so cold that the snow is “dry” and gets packed down on roadways...Not too bad to drive if you take it easy...In the south, we have “wet” snows usually that just becomes slippery, slick slush and driving is just sliding along here and there...

For northerners the most dangerous snow storm is the first one of the season.

Everybody has forgotten to slow down...yikes!
