To all my fellow Freepers who live in California,
Especially those in the Los Angeles area,
I'm monitoring the out-of-control fires that are raging in your area. My heart breaks for you all.
The scenes I am seeing look like a Biblical disaster. A small nuclear device would have done less damage. The entire LA area looks like it will be utterly destroyed.
I'm leaving out any discussion of fault, that is fodder for another thread. This thread is simply to wish you all well. Please remember, your life (and the life of those you love, including pets) is of paramount importance. Material goods, while important, are not as important as your safety.
As you can, please check in and let us know you are safe.
For those who have not yet understood how bad it is, please see this video, which is a shot someone took who was flying into LAX.
Heartbreaking. My prayers are with you all.
Glad you are okay. Thanks for checking in.

There are over 18.42 million souls that live in LA county. My prayers are with them all.
+1000!
I see your hair is burning.
Hills are filled with fire.
If they say I never loved you,
You know they are a liar.

I'm surrounded by them. However, when my housemate (liberal Democrat with her feet firmly planted in the 1950s) and I go to the American Legion monthly barbecue tonight, we'll be among real people.
I lived at the top of a cliff in Palos Verdes for a year in the 60’s. Was a wonderful time to be young and driving a convertible. Fond memories of driving all over those hills with 60’s music blaring. Hard to imagine the hills turned black instead of green in the winter, or model railroad brown/grey/green in the summer. So many people are going to have to figure out how you move forward from this.
I do recognize the importance of life over things, but I was incredibly grateful to read how the Getty Villa protected itself with its own water storage and air system to not let the smoke damage historical artifacts. That was the one thing I googled in fear.
+1
I suspect Getty Villa is not out of the woods yet.
My nephew and his family live in Altadena, “above Pasadena”. They were evacuated last night and returned today to discover their entire block—every house—burned to the ground overnight. They are now homeless, but they are not lifeless.
For perspective, far, far less than 1% of the county has burned.
They are, indeed, real people. Liberals are misguided as hell, but you cannot call yourself a human if you cannot work up some empathy for them in these circumstances.
The ones I have ZERO empathy for are those that view this as a good opportunity to loot. Vultures, to a person.
From the air, this looks more like a nuclear disaster than a fire.
Perhaps, but there are more than 18 million souls in the region.
Agreed. We should help our fellow Americans get out of harm’s way and try to judiciously save as much property as possible. There will be plenty of time to point fingers and assign blame & liabilities. Now is the time to pray and help.
I'm glad you 'get it'.

The heavy Santa Ana winds have calmed down some in eastern Orange County. We have been vastly luckier than LA County but a spark can change everything in a hurry. NWS has issued a Red Flag warning through Friday evening.
High winds are forecast for Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph, humidity at 10%.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now....or will shortly. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
I can check in for all of the above. Here in central California, home of Free Republic, we are ok!
I am in the Riverside County Mountains. So far, so good. The power has been off since 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and is expected to remain off until Friday. Our only concern with the intense winds is the squatters. Thank you for thinking of us Laz.
Beautiful post Laz. The photos & video are just unbelievable.
