In 1978, the Carter administration made a deal with General Omar Torrijos, the uniformed socialist strongman who had seized power in Panama, to abandon America’s crown jewel.
The Panama Canal had been built with over a decade of labor and half a billion of early twentieth century dollars by American engineers and visionaries who succeeded where the British and the French had failed, in the process they created a new country, Panama, and new trade routes.
Jimmy Carter had run for office promising to oppose a surrender of the canal. As with most of his policies, he turned out to have been lying.

Take over the country by installing a favorable government, and then no force is necessary. We have done it multiple times in the past.

Yes we have. Saddam Hussein is a prime example. And I don’t have to ask.... “How’d that work out for us?”
I still remember a popular bumper sticker from then.
“JIMMY CARTER! The Best President PANAMA Ever Had!”
He gave th canal to Torijos, he stabbed Augusto Pinochet in Chile in the back, he backed the Sandinistas when they overthrew Somoza in Nicaragua. He allowed Castro to carry out the Mariel boat lift, in which Castro sent us the USA every prisoner and criminal in Cuba. He and Andrew Young destroyed Rhodesia and paved the way for Mugabe to take over and form Rhodesia. He threatened troop withdrawals from Korea because he couldn’t manipulate Park Chung Hee, to the point where Japan, South Korea and Taiwan had to complain and warn the US about an invasion from North Korea.
Well, okay, he did do all that... but then he pretended to build a few houses and give them away with cameras rolling. That makes everything okay.
Caesar used to take entire nations. Then they became Rome. He didn’t lease anything. I miss Caesars.
“Kinda hypocritical of the U.S. to do so, after suppressing its own Confederate secession effort less than 40 years earlier.”
Geopolitics and national interests have never been concerned with “hypocracy”.
The world and international politics are a complicated and dangerous place.
The relevant quote is:“America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests”
Funny how they are all from the same political party, huh.
I was there for five years, 1985-1989.
The treaty was not popular with most Panamanians I communicated with. They knew their government was corrupt. They knew the management of the Canal would be corrupted.
They mostly liked Americans.

The United Kingdom obtained control over portions of Hong Kong’s territory through three treaties concluded with Qing China after the Opium Wars:
1842 Treaty of Nanking: Hong Kong Island ceded in perpetuity
1860 Convention of Peking: Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutter’s Island additionally ceded
1898 Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory: the New Territories and outlying islands leased for 99 years until 1997
Despite the finite nature of the New Territories lease, this portion of the colony was developed just as rapidly as, and became highly integrated with, the rest of Hong Kong. As the end of the lease approached, and by the time of serious negotiations over the future status of Hong Kong in the 1980s, it was thought[citation needed] impractical to separate the ceded territories and return only the New Territories to China. In addition, with the scarcity of land and natural resources in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, large-scale infrastructure investments had been made in the New Territories, with break-evens lying well past 30 June 1997.

“Xi would be happy to provide Chinese military forces to stop Trump’s plans.”
How would he get them there? More importantly how would he supply them?
L
… or Edith (17th amendment) Wilson?
My point exactly.
I have no doubt that China is interfering in elections/coups in our hemisphere. We have to get back into a Reagan-era mind frame. New Cold War; different adversary.
Yes. Think of how well Trump handled Dear Leader in North Korea. How diplomatically Trump averted hostile actions there.
Biden did OK with China simply because he was a bought and paid for Chinese flunkie, but Trump will man up and take the correct approach.
They also dealt with constant uprisings and rebellions having to militarize the entire “country” against itself eventually causing the entire thing to collapse. Not something to miss.
Find a new route and they’ll be begging us to take it off their hands.
I am a conservative although I don’t like to call myself a conservative because it has been misappropriated by so many globalists in the Republican wing of the Uniparty.
The giveaway of the Panama Canal was the defining moment in my ideological disposition.
I NEVER liked the poseur Billy Buckley or his National Review.
I’ll never forget when Phyllis Schafly had the balls to take on that Eastern establishment effete snob Buckley on his signature program the Firing Line.
She spanked him good over his position siding with Jimmah on his giveaway of the canal.
Phyllis was from the heartland and although she had the intellectual skills to do battle with the likes of Buckley and the National Review snobs, her conservatism was rooted in old fashioned Midwestern values as was Rush Limbaugh’s.
Unfortunately, Rush gave too much cred to the National Review crew and for whatever reasons not the credit due his fellow Missourian.
Too Schafly’s credit she jumped on the Trump train very early unlike the National Review which became a bastion for Never Trumpers and what’s left of it still is.
The debate over Carter’s giveaway EXPOSED the globalists in the Republican wing of the Uniparty pretending to be America First conservatives.
That’s one of the things this is about. Trump is telling China “You think you can project power”? He’s going to target all the CCP incursions in the west and make China withdraw like little biotches.
“Jimmy Carter had run for office promising to oppose a surrender of the canal”
People say Jimmah was a good guy, but he is much like Biden.
And with decades to reflect on his judgement and seeing the results, Jimmah still voted Democrat and then transitioned seamlessly to commie (voting Biden and Kamala).
Jimmah was a bad dude. Bad to the bone. I’m gonna have a party on the 9th. I got that day off, woo hoo!.
They should simply never had taken it in the first place. Just as slaves should never have been dragged to the U.S. from Africa. We didn’t need a single slave and we don’t need a single illegal today. It’s the merchant class. Always the merchants. How I loathe them.
