Newt Gingrich Rages Against House Republicans Who Initially Did Not Vote For Johnson

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) joined Fox News on Friday as the House vote to elect a speaker was underway and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) fell short of his keeping his job on the first ballot.

Gingrich was asked to weigh in on the vote and pulled no punches in slamming the House GOP members who tanked Johnson, “They’re contrarians. And you can’t have a contrarian caucus with a very, very narrow margin.”

“You were kind about my speakership, but I had a much bigger majority. And we had a country which was decisive. Now, the question I’d ask about Norman and Massie, so what’s part two? Well, other than helping Hakeem Jeffries and hurting Donald Trump, what do you think you’re accomplishing?” Gingrich continued, adding:

Up until the 2018 election cycle I lived in a suburban area of the Northeast that had been represented by a Republican continuously for more than a hundred years.

The guy in office at the time was a “moderate,” lame squish — a RINO, by any measure.

I got into a heated argument here on FR with another voter in that district who refused to support the guy because he wasn’t “MAGA” enough. This Freeper was a nitwit, since a MAGA Congressman didn’t stand a chance in hell of winning there. Something like 2% of the people in that district are employed in the manufacturing sector. The dominant industries are banking, Wall Street and pharmaceutical R&D.

That congressman retired in 2018. A somewhat “MAGA” firebrand won the primary, then promptly lost in the general election. It’s been in Democrat hands since then, and will probably be Democratic for the rest of my life.

A lot of people here on this website are apparently so tone-deaf and politically clueless that they haven’t figured out something that any politically observant person knows: There are many parts of this country where defeating RINO Congressmen doesn’t get you MAGA Congressmen. They’re replaced by Democrats.

Go back and look at the 1994 “Contract with America.” It is filled with good — but somewhat lame and inoffensive — provisions. That was by design. Gingrich and the GOP leadership spent two years doing extensive polling and focus groups, and they only included things in the Contract that had the support of at least 60% of the voters.

You’d have a hard time finding 8-10 issues today that would get that kind of support … and that’s assuming you would even trust the polling at all.

More insulation for the agenda!

The narrowly divided House has adopted a rules package, with a vote of 215-209, that most notably will see a significantly raised threshold for members to trigger an effort to oust the speaker.

He goes wherever he thinks it will help him look better. He is and has always seemed so slimy to me.

Yeah :( I know he has lots of personal baggage. (as does Trump to be honest) but appreciate him using whatever clout he has remaining to stick up for Trump.

I understand what you mean, and it explains why Gingrich never got far in the primaries. His political analysis as an observer though is spot on at least.

“ The majority wouldn’t be so narrow if the RNC had gotten it together and focused on the narrow house races that literally had victories reversed : stolen by the Dems.”

____________

Bears repeating. We’re in this predicament deliberately.

Trump is super busy but he must not keep eye off the ball with regard to the RNC and its pending leadership now that Lara Trump is gone. Prayers up for a fighter and one with legal backbone and experience to boot. Electoral integrity remains the top priority.

I am hopeful for the future. Maybe Trump can pull us thru unless they kill him first.

“..The 2nd district congressman, incumbent Bruce Poliquin, had his seat stolen by Rank Choice Voting.

The Republican actually had 2,200 more votes than the RAT, Jaren Golden. Neither candidate had over 50% in the 2018 race, so when the second choices of the two minor candidates were counted, the RAT made it over the finish line....”

Yep.
In an upfront, fair election, Golden would not have won.
RCV was designed by RATs, for RATs....it’s a part of their “legalized” cheating efort.

Gingrich is on the team - and he’s telling two idiots they can’t call their own plays. Good for Newt.

It was boilerplate foe sure. Some if not all reforms are gone. Things like House hair salons, free cafeteria etc.

Big things like welfare are bigger than ever with billions going to illegals.

They never held their ground. We fight then retreat.

Your post is very instructive. There is truth in the old saw that all or nothing folks often end up with nothing.

As I have said over and over again:

The “time to primary the RINOs” crowd does not accept that, after they are replaced on the ballot with conservatards, the next congressman will be a communist.

NH 1 was very competitive until recently. The process you describe so well has turned the district blue - and this in a state with a Republican governor and legislature.
