A powerful winter storm system is set to impact much of the country, bringing multiple hazards including heavy snow, dangerous ice, and severe thunderstorms. This system will be accompanied by an intense cold blast that could send wind chills plummeting below -20°F in some areas.
What makes this storm different:
Multiple precipitation types creating hazardous conditions Significant temperature drops of 10-20 degrees below normal Potential for heavy snow accumulation Dangerous wind chills Risk of severe thunderstorms in warmer sectors
Stay tuned for updates as this system develops. While timing and exact impacts may change, this storm system has the potential to create significant travel disruptions and dangerous conditions.
Video is 10:22 minutes long
That storm in March of ‘93 was absolutely one for the record books.
Syracuse got hammered from it with snowfall from the storm itself, then lake effect the next day as the storm pulled off the coast.
Yeah, well, wind chill is a real thing. A strong wind can suck heat out of you faster than could be believed.
Any temperature below 20 hurts, but add some wind to it and it become brutal and can freeze exposed skin even faster.
Frostbite is a real danger, and wind can be a factor in that.
I don’t recall him ever presenting himself as an alternative to other weather forecasters.
NOBODY will ever be able to completely accurately forecast the weather.
The atmosphere is in a constant state of flux. You might as well try to hit a bullseye on a moving target while you’re riding on horseback over rough terrain.
When you learn a little about meteorology, you understand the limitations. It’s everyone else that demands perfection from forecasters.
Me? I’d rather have some warning about what might be potentially coming so I can prepare for it. Not in a panic way, but in a reasonable precaution way. Then if nothing happens, nothing is lost. I’ll sue the stuff I prepped with anyways.
If it is as bad, or worse, then I’m safe, warm, and well fed and not in a situation where I’m putting more demand on resources to bail out my sorry, lazy butt.
I’ll USE, (not sue) the stuff...
Yes, I know wind chill is real and there is higher evaporative neat loss when you have forced convection heat transfer when there is strong airflow over skin.
But the least they could do is report the correct real temp and then give the “feels like” temp. Or issue a “frostbite” warning when appropriate.
It is only used as a bombastic, hyperbolic scare the bejeebers out of the rubes strategy.
I call them weather guessers. It upsets them when they hear that.
I am in KC planning a family funeral for Saturday. Looks like Sunday could be pretty brutal. It doesn’t snow where I moved to in NC.
Must be a great gig.....you can be wrong half the time and still keep your job.
NOOOO!!!!! Extreme cold IS global warming. Haven’t you been brainwashed yet?
Milk sandwiches are my favorite.
A corollary to that...
Yankees down south always saying southerners don’t know how to drive in the snow. Truth it, they don’t drive in the snow. They’re set up for snow. Roads are being cleared even as the snow falls. Worst drivers in the South are transplanted northerners.
Taking basic precautions. Stocked up on essential foods; gas; pharma products. Power packs etc., fully charged.
Looking at freezing temperatures next week here in The Ozarks.
“Weather set to impact a lot of the southern US.”
Global Warming strikes again.
It’s nice to know that it’s possible to use my stash of t.p. as hair rollers, thanks to spunky’s clever meme. If I had only known that in high school ... Sleeping on t.p. would’ve been much softer than orange juice cans.
Repent then! Seek Jesus!
2025: Foreword by Dean Koontz and Reed Timmer. Jacket blurb by Stephen King.
Yep, went grocery shopping and did the dishes yesterday. Bound to have frozen pipes with the single digit temps. Going to fill up 30+ jugs of water today. Snow, freezing rain and sleet. Half to three quarter inch accumulation. Might be a skating rink out there. Gonna bring as much firewood in as we can find a place for. Wood stove has a nice flat top and will be running hot enough to cook on in case we lose electric.
Let’s see.. I have enough food on hand to last a year, plenty of wood for endless fireplace fires, a whole home generator and fuel to last a few months if run conservatively, well water, two additional heaters i.e kerosene and propane, gas stove and another gas fireplace.
Only thing missing is beer for a month or so...under prepared here.
It’s all about preparation for what might happen not reacting to what just happened.
Those Imperial Walkers are very cool, but there’s not a single thing about them that makes any sense.
