A powerful winter storm system is set to impact much of the country, bringing multiple hazards including heavy snow, dangerous ice, and severe thunderstorms. This system will be accompanied by an intense cold blast that could send wind chills plummeting below -20°F in some areas.
What makes this storm different:
Multiple precipitation types creating hazardous conditions Significant temperature drops of 10-20 degrees below normal Potential for heavy snow accumulation Dangerous wind chills Risk of severe thunderstorms in warmer sectors
Stay tuned for updates as this system develops. While timing and exact impacts may change, this storm system has the potential to create significant travel disruptions and dangerous conditions.

“send wind chills plummeting below -20°F”
I HATE how weather people have adopted the very dramatic “wind chill” numbers. Just tell me the REAL temperature!

Pallets full of toilet paper, just in case.
“Run for the hills!”
More snow predicted at higher elevations.
I opened a can of brand name soup I had bought "just in case". 70% water.

I agree, just give me the surface temperature and the predicted wind speed range.
The “Heat Index” is another confusing weather term. Just give my the surface temperature and the dew point.
3 to 7 I’m he’s expected in the Philly area.

Looks reasonable. Could be a narrow band in northern Maryland of 8-12 by Monday evening, Jan. 6.
Having been right in the worst of the 2009 mid-South ice storm, I have a lot of respect for weather that can kill the electric supply for weeks and bring in unusually cold weather behind it...
Luckily for us (if it holds), the track of this storm has shifted a bit north. If that holds, we shouldn’t get more than about 1/2” of ice. But, this dose looks like it won’t be melting quickly either. :-(
My local grocery store was out of milk several days before Christmas, and the next time I checked again, it was a few days after Christmas. Still no milk. I have a pint or two in my freezer as backup, and it looks like I’m gonna have to thaw those out, and use sparingly. I’ll need to replenish asap.
Yes, and no. The man is as error-prone as those he presents himself as an alternative to.
I was in my local grocery store this evening and while I could find everything i needed I did notice that the meat section was significantly depleted.
What part of Indy? Greenwood or further south?
We have some half n half in the fridge unopened, so if I get desperate, I can water that down as well. I think we’ll be ok. I have some great neighbors that I can barter with if push comes to shove. Normally I’m at the store at least a couple of times a week, but this week has been an odd one for me. I’m trying to use up leftovers first.
Yep, you’re out building a snowman with the kids when you happen to see “them” on the horizon...Imperial toilet paper raiders
Polar bomb cyclone? Has it been named?
Ryan does a better job than most meteorologists employed by news-sites. He is good at predicting where tornado outbreaks will occur and can pinpoint down to the street where a tornado is headed. I tune into his site when active weather situations are happening. By Friday afternoon, he will be telling us which counties and towns will receive the most ice and snow from this developing system.
I wish you could have seen the local front-page headlines here.
They’re still pushing ‘climate change’ in reporting on this weather phenomenon as though ‘fossil fuels’ and humans are responsible.
Frankly, I’m ready to take a baseball bat to the criminals’ legs (now more than ever I believe it’s necessary).
You right wing ANTI-science fanatics don't understand the polar vortex will get stronger as the Earth warms from man made climate change (increased CO2 caused by the burning of fossil fuels by man).
A couple of years ago, South Pole station had the COLDEST MEASURED TEMPERATUE ever and the winter temperature months showed the coldest average since measurements started.
If you would just watch the WEATHER CHANNEL you would know that the stronger polar vortex which is made stronger by the warming Earth will bring colder temperatures down from the Artic and will cause colder temperatures far from the Artic. As the Earth warms, it's going to get colder.
IF you have any questions, please contact Dr. Al Gore, who won the Nobel Prize for his work in climate change. / sarc
Glad to hear it.
Let me known how you fare.
No, she wasn’t.
