A powerful winter storm system is set to impact much of the country, bringing multiple hazards including heavy snow, dangerous ice, and severe thunderstorms. This system will be accompanied by an intense cold blast that could send wind chills plummeting below -20°F in some areas.
What makes this storm different:

For all the mockery and derision we get for reporting a major storm is brewing, it's good to know that some people are prepared.
I prep for ever winter because we get slammed with nor'easters on occasion a we lose power from it regularly. Two years ago we lost a power pole and were without power for two days.
But we also had enough food, lots of wood, a great wood stove and a dual fuel whole house generator.
The only thing that couldn't be fixed was the internet.

“My local grocery store was out of milk several days before Christmas, and the next time I checked again, it was a few days after Christmas. Still no milk. I have a pint or two in my freezer as backup, and it looks like I’m gonna have to thaw those out, and use sparingly. I’ll need to replenish asap.”
We use very little milk in our household, I have some in my coffee in the morning and then we use milk for baking as well.
I find small pints go bad quickly so I purchase ultra pasteurized milk that is shelf stable:

I typically buy a case and it lasts more than a year — it also lasts longer in the ‘fridge after it’s open.
Now that’s an interesting tip. Does Dollar Tree sell it at the store piecemeal or is it only by the case?
Often it’s at the Dollar Tree on the shelf but I purchase a case anyway...
Other stores in my area sell UHT milk in quarts, just for more $$$ — look for it near soy/almond/etc. milk.

I got clued into Ryan Hall during hurricane Helene. He does a great job. He has a few people working with him that chime in from time to time with warnings ahead of NWS. His team donated and helped out so much in WNC. We actually donated to his crew as well. In fact, he might be the one that used to be a TV weatherman and couldn’t stand the hype and insanity he was “supposed” to be doing and ultimately quit.
A quart only lasts a week, maybe two, around here, so that should work fine for us.
I’m in KC and we’re expecting lots of ice, which means power outages all over the area. I don’t mind the snow since I don’t have to get out in it but with no power, it’s a concern. Guess I’ll have to get under the many blankets with my 2 pups and hibernate til the power comes on!

I was a bit closer to you today! (We live in Danville, it’s west of Indy.) We drove to the West Baden Springs Hotel today. Just a day trip. It’s such a beautiful hotel! That it’s so tucked away makes it special.
We just happened to stumble across it a few years ago while taking the scenic route home. We stopped in Owensboro to see an old old friend, and then just drove on roads we’d never been on. French Lick was in the vicinity and hubby knew that Larry Bird was from there, so we went that route. Got lunch and a lady at an antique shop told us that we should go to the WBSH just to see the atrium. We could’ve believe our eyes! It’s like discovering that the Taj Mahal is hidden in south central Indiana. Who knew?
Now we try to make a day trip every couple of years. Did a quick hike, had an early dinner, took lots of photos of Christmas decorations that were still up (until Monday!), and drove home. Just got back.
Not sure if we will get much snow or ice, just some decently cold temps. We’ll see.
Ugh. It is not looking great in the mid-south! The present forecast for us is 1/2” of ice, but a 1 deg. F change could make it an inch. Windy too... so even the 1/2” could cause many power outages. Ugh.
We live about 11 miles from Owensboro. Yes West Baden is something else. So pretty.

For all people whining about forecasts, if someone lives in the affected area, they DO want to know what’s potentially going to happen so they can be ready for it.
If it isn’t, then they can be grateful that they dodged the bullet, instead of whining about how meteorologists *always* get it wrong.
And those who don’t live in the affected area and just ignore it if they don’t like it.
