When Jimmy Carter was president from 1977 to 1981, gays and lesbians were unable to obtain government security clearance, same-sex intimacy was illegal in at least two dozen states, and gay marriage was no more than a radical pipe dream. Moreover, political support for LGBTQ causes was still largely taboo for politicians on both sides of the aisle.
But Carter, a Southern Democrat and devout Baptist, stood out for his early support for pro-gay legislation and his embrace of LGBTQ advocates.
...
In 1976, when Carter, a former Georgia governor, was running for president, he voiced his support for legislation that is controversial even among some of today’s politicians. The measure, known as the Equality Act, sought to amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Who is that?
Every boy's favorite clown, John Wayne Gacy!
So, what you’re saying is, the Carter years weren’t quite as bad as they seemed at the time.
Hey Jimmy, did u hear about the two married gays who adopted two boys and then raped them repeatedly on video and bragged to all their gay friends, who did nothing to save these young boys...ITS ALL ON YOU AND YOUR ILK.
Yes that “ in your face sexuality 24/7”..is what has destroyed our society...
I would like to learn about this. Do you have any references or links with more details? Thanks.
Billy Crystal on “Soap” breached the wall.
Mel Brooks did it in movies.
Comedy did it. Not Jimmuh the Doosh

Used to, but it no longer shows up in a google search.
The usual.
This isn’t the one I was looking for, but it looks like it has some decent information in Section 7.

My APA Resignation
https://freerepublic.com/focus/news/4026029/posts?page=2
I am both dismayed and stunned by how persistent they were in disrupting and arguing and lobbying for their cause, and how the APA folded so completely, even though it took some time. And we can't even blame it on women, since the APA was largely male dominated, as the JSTOR article notes. This truly was the first wall to be breached in the gay movement.
They weren’t even denied the “right to marry.” They could marry the same type of person that anyone else could marry, on the exact same basis. In fact, many “gay” men DID marry women and have families with them.
I always thought that Carter lurched left with the Dem Party. Now I see that he lead a lot of the agenda.
Good riddance.
The actor who “breached the wall” first was Vincent Schiavelli* in 1972 (5 years before Billy Crystal) playing Peter Panama a flamboyant set designer on “The Corner Bar” He was prime time’s first recurring or regular gay character.
*Schiavelli’s most recognizable roles were the Subway Ghost in “Ghost” (1990)” and Mr. Vargas, the biology teacher in the 1982 comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
He was also in “Amadeus.”

Thank you for that blast from the past.
I guess that one was before my TV viewing memories.
So all the hideous faggotry we currently face is Jimmy Carter’s fault?
