Thank you both for the links/references. I read some, especially the NIH article.

I am both dismayed and stunned by how persistent they were in disrupting and arguing and lobbying for their cause, and how the APA folded so completely, even though it took some time. And we can't even blame it on women, since the APA was largely male dominated, as the JSTOR article notes. This truly was the first wall to be breached in the gay movement.
