The designation makes the breed eligible to compete for many best in show trophies, and it likely augurs more widespread interest in the small, sprightly dogs. The prospect both gladdens and concerns their biggest fans.
...
Called the farmdog or DSF for short, the breed goes back centuries in parts of what are now Denmark, southern Sweden and some other European countries, according to the Danish-Swedish Farmdog Club of America.
...
In their original homelands, the dogs’ main job was rodent patrol, but they also would herd a bit, act as watchdogs and play with farmers’ children. Some even performed in circuses, according to the club.
...
In the U.S., many of the just about 350 farmdogs nationwide compete in agility, obedience or other canine sports that are open to all dogs, including mixed breeds.
But until now, farmdogs couldn’t enter the traditional breed-by-breed judging that leads to best in show prizes at events including the prominent Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York. The entry deadline has passed for February’s Westminster show, so farmdogs will have to wait for 2026 there, but they may well appear later this year at two other major, televised shows, the National Dog Show and AKC National Championship.
The Danish-Swedish farmdog is the AKC’s 202nd breed and “a wonderful addition to a family that is able to provide it with the exercise and mental stimulation that it needs,” said the club’s Gina DiNardo.
The AKC is the United States’ oldest purebred dog registry and essentially a league for many dog competitions. Registration is voluntary, and requirements for breed recognition include at least 300 pedigreed dogs spread through at least 20 states. Some breeds are in other kennel clubs or none at all.

That doesn’t look like a very “distinctive” breed. A lot like half the mixes that come into our humane shelter.
Looks like a cross between a Beagle and a Jack Russell Terrier..............
Yes my first thought was ... that’s a beagle ....and then I saw the Snoopy under your post and was like... yep a beagle :)
Looks like nothing more than a beagle/labrador mix. Typical mutt.
I wouldn’t say Jack Russell terrier, wife and I had one as a family member for 16 years - they are more elongated in the snout and not nearly as bulky as this dog, hence why I postulate beagle/lab. Could be wrong, just how I see it.
very strong neck for a beagle. Also, it does not seem to have a beagles hunting nose. I think its a barn dog. Something that keeps vermin away. It will never replace my Border Collie.
I’d go with Beagle mix for that one. Would be interested in seeing what its DNA says.
we have a Swiss white Shepherd. she weighs in at 80 lbs and is by far the smartest, craftiest and agile family member we have ever known. on our mini-farm she is Queen, Shepards the smaller animals, makes certain we are safe and has absolutely NO fear.
Know why God made Beagles so cute?
So you won't F****** KILL them!
Unfortunately, too many people will seek out any “new” type of breed - this one in particular needs a lot of space, running and exercise - and unless someone is dedicated, able and willing to put in the time and effort it takes to train and take care of these dogs, they become nervous wrecks - many are dumped into shelters.
Have seen it myself often after volunteering with rescues and shelters.
I can’t keep track of all the “new” breeds that the AKC recognizes year-after-year. I assume that private breed clubs simply find it easier and cheaper to turn their breed books over to the larger organization and let them administer it? I recall that certain breed names “Jack Russell” and “Parson Russell” are pretty much a result of a split within the founding club. The AKC requires consensus on the breed standard. Sometimes that consensus isn’t 100%, I guess.
We’re making new breeds of people daily, except the ones we kill in our lovely women’s wombs.
Such lovely moms. Heroes. Leaders.

Looks like a Jack Russell Terrier to me.
Cute pup!
Thanks, Mass55th!
I try to keep up but even I have a hard time sometimes. This one does have a beagle look to it but I would bet it acts nothing like a beagle. I’ve worked with a lot of breeds and this one is interesting.
As far as breed clubs going to the AKC that makes perfect sense. The AKC is a record keeping organization.
