President-elect Trump is headed for a battle over the debt limit with conservative lawmakers who are demanding steep cuts to federal spending that will significantly complicate Trump’s ability to pass his agenda next year.
Thirty-eight House Republicans sent a warning to Trump last week by rejecting his demand to extend the nation’s borrowing authority for two years, casting doubt on Trump’s influence over GOP conservatives.
Conservatives now say Trump will need to agree to deep cuts in spending if he wants their support for raising the debt limit in 2025.
“We’re about 33 percent overdrawn. We bring in about $4.8 trillion [in revenue] and spend $6.8 trillion [per year], so you got to get about $2 trillion worth of spending down,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said.
Paul hailed the defeat of Trump’s plan to raise the debt limit as part of a stopgap government funding measure. He said it shows the leverage fiscal hawks will have over the White House next year.
He said there are blocs of conservatives in both chambers who will insist on matching a debt limit increase with big spending cuts.
“That debate’s going to be ongoing. I for one am going to do what I can to make sure the debt ceiling becomes more important,” he said.
Paul called the defeat of Trump’s proposal to raise the debt limit without spending cuts “a good day for conservatives.”

As long as it's not the wall, Border Patrol, or ICE.
You idiots!
What do you think DOGE is all about???
Please no unnecessary drama before Inauguration.
It should be Medicare. Social security and defense. Those are our biggest bills. Cut checks by 20 percent. Increase deductibles by 50 percent and cut defense down to 700 billion. That should do it. I hope that go this route. The bandaid needs to be ripped off finally.
And the best way to lose the House and Senate by breaking the social contract with the millions of US citizens that have paid into Social Security and rightfully expect to get the most out of that system when they need it most.
Cuts? So to have a tax cut they have to cut spendnng to pay for it? That is BS. Tax cuts INCREASE revenue. That is the problem with the ceiling.
Ok, you are high?
Notice the “Hill” no longer accepts comments?
They could no longer contain/restrain their rabid liberal
supporters.
I no longer give them any credibility.
No cuts needed in social security or Medicare. Just eliminate the income ceiling at which taxes stop being taken out. Why should one billion (1000 million) income pay same tax as 1 million income?
I predict by time president trump leaves our debt will be 44 trillion. And your post pretty much says the reason why. Nobody is serious about cuts. Oh the big bad saving cut every one brags over is department of education. Wow! 268 billion in cuts. We must Pat ourselves on the back for that.
A conservative. Obviously you are not serious about cutting 2 trillion from the budget.
It should be Medicare. Social security and defense.
@@@@@@
JMO but those of us that work pay taxes to fund these three programs.
What we don’t pay taxes for is support for 30 million illegal aliens, Foreign Aid, the UN and its bottomless pit spin-offs such as WTO, WMF, UNWRA, UNICEF, Etc. it’s also time to bring home troops deployed to support NATO, withdraw from the UN, and kick the Organization off of American soil. As a side note a serious look needs to be taken at Medicare especially as administered by states such as California ( a state that is single handidly bankrupting America).
Hopefully day one President Trump will restore law and order to the nation and DOGE will chop spending off at the knees. Pray that enough pressure and a sense of true statesmanship overwhelms the HOR to seat the speaker and get the train rolling out of the station on time!
WWG1WGA!
Cut Medicare and Social Security and Repubs will be recalled, primaries, and lose the House & Senate in 2026.
Probably the presidency in 2028 as well.
No, use DOGE to reduce all the other gov’t by half, get rid off all corporate welfare (4X as much as is spent oj food stamps and Medicaid), end H1-b, find all fraud and abuse in social welfare spending, tell Europe they can handle Putin all together militarily (and they can) then reduce military spending by 20%.
This will balance the budget while shoring up Social Security and Medicare.
The Federal Government now spends more money on Social Security Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, interest on the National Debt, and defense than it collects in taxes. So without cuts to those categories, even if the government totally eliminated all other spending, the budget still wouldn’t balance.
These massive deficits in spending every year, by every president of late, has kept the system barely functioning. The only ‘growth’ we get now has been massive deficits and debt, and Republican and Democrat voters show no interest in stopping that spending.
I think Trump is going to make a lot of dramatic cuts
We have to stop running up more and more debt.
All this harping over the debt ceiling is so stupid and fake. We are SO far in massive debt this little, latest move means nothing. Get sworn in, get Trump in, and get behind him as a united block. Get shit done, and build on it. Get more House Reps elected in 2022 and make bolder moves. One step at a time. This is NOT the way.
Come on, whatever The Don proposes they are completely on board with, always rationale as to why it’s 6D chess.
Cut Medicare and Social Security and Repubs will be recalled, primaried, and lose the House & Senate in 2026.

No, use DOGE to reduce all the gov’t agencies by half, get rid off all corporate welfare (I believe it was 4X as much is spent on this as is spent on food stamps and Medicaid as Stossel reported), end H1-b, deport millions of illegals, save hundreds of billions per year by evicting them find all fraud and abuse in social welfare spending, tell Europe they can handle Putin all together militarily (and they can) then reduce military spending by 20%.
This will balance the budget while shoring up Social Security and Medicare.
