Polar vortex headed for US will bring ‘exceptionally cold’ temps in the new year: ‘Weather models are screaming’ (only 6.11 years left)
NY Post ^ | 12/30/24 | Alex Oliveira

January is shaping up to be the coldest in a decade as the polar vortex dips south across the eastern half of the United States — shocking a nation that has enjoyed an unusually balmy end of the year.

“It’s going to get cold, and then very cold,” a Fox Weather meteorologist told The Post Monday.

“Based on the latest long-range data, this January has the potential to be the coldest since 2014,” they added.

Temperatures are expected to begin dropping from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast around Thursday, but the real plunge will set in sometime between seven and 14 days from now.

The plunge will bring wind chills across the Midwest dipping below zero, “exceptionally cold” temperatures down to 20 degrees below average in some places, and freezing conditions setting in as far south as the Gulf coast and even into Florida — though it is still too early to forecast exact temperatures.

And there is a “pretty good chance” the vortex will bring with it “significant winter storms,” Fox Weather cautioned.

“The prime window for these winter storms would be the middle to end of next week,” they said, adding that the southeast could even see snow or ice.

While most polar vortex forecasts are often unpredictable, Fox Weather said this round of cold is different.

“This is a very highly confident forecast. Across the board the weather models are screaming at us that this really cold air is on the way,” the meteorologist said.

The cold is expected to persist throughout January, with relief coming once February rolls around.

“But this is a polar vortex.”

I guess the only thing worse is a sharknado...

The only vortex I care about is the one I create when I push down the handle on the toilet…

Nuff said about that.

Polar vortex, arctic river, Canadian express, etc.

As mentioned before, ad nauseam, it's called winter.

The climate bozos cry when the summers are hot, then when the winters are cold. Be afraid! Be very afraid!

From what I've picked up, weather models don't usually scream unless the planet is in fire. Very confusing.

The warming makes things colder. I thought everyone knew that!

I'm tryin! I'm cryin!

Mark 4:38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?

Ugh, memories of 2014. I'll never forget that one, the entire Great Lakes froze over and there were icebergs on Lake Superior. We gave up trying to get wife's car out of the driveway and we shared my F-150 for a month.

Your post made me realize I should really go out today while it's still warm and run the tractor for a bit before filling it completely with fuel. The tractor is the only way we can get the cars out of the driveway when the bad storms hit, especially when the snowplows pile the snow and ice at the end of our drive.

Got up at 4:00 AM to start the smoker and stuff a turkey...it’s not quite 5:00 AM and it’s 25 F outside.

Since it looks like this thing might really hit, I got out the log splitter yesterday and started working on a bunch of cut wood for our wood burner.

55 degrees here in southern NH yesterday.
People on the Ski the Northeast Facebook page keep posting pictures from their vacations up north with spring/rocks/dirt conditions.

Or asking what else is there to do around Jay Peak with hardly any snow?

Its too bad, there was a pretty good base building up until the day after Christmas. Some places were 100% open. Now, they are toast.

The hyper/extreme language used to describe just about anything today is tiresome. A ready example is the now popular term “Atmospheric River” to describe a series of winter storms originating in the tropical Pacific. Pretty common. We used to call it “The Pineapple Express”, which was quite a bit more fun.

I am so jeaoulous. I am going to occupied tonight but fully intend to smoke a brisket tomorrow. My brisket takes 18 hours to get the best out of it.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
