The New York Stock Exchange will close trading on Thursday, Jan. 9, in accordance with a national day of mourning for the death of former President Jimmy Carter.
It is customary for the NYSE to close trading to honor the passing of a president. The last such occasion was in December 2018 for the death of former President George Herbert Walker Bush.
The Nasdaq exchange will also close trading that day. Bond market trading will end early at 2 p.m. ET, per the recommendation of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Carter, the nation’s 39th president known for his post-presidency peacekeeping and humanitarian work, died Sunday at the age of 100. President Joe Biden on Sunday declared Jan. 9 as a day of mourning for the nation. Carter’s funeral will be held that day at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Biden also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days beginning Sunday.

Shutting down business seems like a fitting tribute to him. Lord knows his economic policies did plenty of that.
State funeral to distract us from the current cadaverous President.
You better be going to jail for this because I did! 😁
Another Federal Holiday! Yay! We might get two of these in 2025 if Biden goes.
I normally post the entire article if possible, but this time I truncated it so as to limit any possible retribution...........😁
Jan 9 should be a day of remembrance (not mourning) for Jimmy Carter.
He had a good, very long life with many achievements, even though he was not the most successful President. And his remembrance should be a Christian one, since he was a Christian all his life.
Is it appropriate to say “late former”? Isn’t “former” implied by “late”?
The Bible tells us that we mere humans are entitled to ‘Threescore and ten’ (70) years. Anything above that is God’s grace and gift to you......................
Former doesn’t imply ‘late’ which implies ‘dead’...........
Any amount of life is God’s gift!
Best post
Just curious, but is there a significance to January 9th? Or is it just the date they picked to do this?
Just the date they, Congress, picked. I don’t think it’s significant for any particular reason...........
True, but We should at least make 70 if we live properly:
Psalm 90:10 - King James Version
10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
I doubt we’ll get the day off.
Who happens to be outgoing.
Indeed.
I know, but if you are late, you definitely are former.
Excellent!
