Someone in California has a winning Mega Millions ticket worth about $1.22 billion, which was drawn on Friday.
The ticket with the numbers 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and gold Mega Ball 6 was sold at Sunshine Food and Gas on Rhonda Road in Cottonwood, the Associated Press (AP) reported on Saturday:
However, the identity of the winner or winners of the lottery remain a mystery. The AP article continued:
The total amount of the Mega Millions jackpot would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Nearly all grand prize winners opt to take a cash payout, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated $549.7 million.
Despite the game’s long odds of 1 in 302.6 million, players continued to purchase tickets as the size of the grand prize grew. Until Friday, the last time a Mega Millions player hit the top prize was Sept. 10.

I remember my finite math class and we explored the odds of winning the lottery. At that time it was 14 million to 1. And the likelihood of winning was the same as getting struck by lightening in your bathtub. Twice.
Still $2 about a week before Christmas. If it goes to $5, I guess I’ll quit buying tickets.
Build-’er-back?
I knew it!
Yep.
Me too.
US Texans tend to forget foreigners have to pay state income taxes.
I have noticed year after year when the holiday season rolls around it tends to go unwon until it reaches an enormous sum which is then won around Xmas or new years. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
I hope it was a Robinson so we can end these FReepathons.
My wife has fantasies about winning these massive jackpots.
Ever the optimist, I think about everyone I've ever known in my life hitting me up for handouts, my financial advisors ripping me off, and people trying to kidnap my children.
I heard earlier today that if whoever takes the cash runs. He will only get a little over $500 million. The rest goes to the government for doing nothing. I would just soon take my money and burn it rather than waste it on a lottery ticket.
I was gonna ask the same question
I worked with a woman that won $740 million. She called in the next morning and quit. Then she went to the lottery office and had the money by the end of the day. Her name and face was plastered all over the media for a week or so.
She was an idiot. The had people lined up outside of her home for weeks.
I read of one couple that won big, then got divorced.
Some years later IIRC, both of them were found dead, alone in their huge homes alone. Both having been dead for quite some time before anyone cared or noticed that they were gone.
I like the stories where the husband and wife splurged and each got new cars and new paint and carpet for all the rooms in the house. Put most of it in investments for their kids and grandkids. Gave a bunch to the local church.
Lotteries were supposed to fund education in CA. Why is half of my tax dollar going to edu.?
Glad that someone in Cottonwood won. It’s not Atherton.
$2B plus or it’s not worth it.
I figure the odds at 1:302 million so if the jackpot is over 302 millions I’ll throw a buck at it !!!
That would be the least of my concerns.
If I can proficiently say “no” to members of my own family (and I can) I’ll have no problem with slamming the door on everyone else.
Your other points are valid, however.
I wouldn’t be surprised if no one wins and it’s all a scam. But,if it’s legit, the article says the winner is a mystery. It ought to be law that the winner cannot be revealed unless he or she voluntarily reveals his or herself. No good can come to the winner from that being public knowledge.
Cottonwood, CA, is MAGA country. A small rural town in Shasta County, with approximately 6,000 residents.
A local resident could have won the drawing, or just as likely, a traveler on Interstate 5, stopped in town to get some gasoline for their vehicle, and or... maybe just stopped to use the restroom?
What a juxtaposition, right?
I find that very hard to believe. It’s California they tax everything. Twice.
