New Yorkers, beware the law of unintended consequences.
From an item at the New York Post comes the news that Kathy Hochul has just signed a new bill, “modeled after a federal law that holds polluters responsible for abandoned toxic-waste sites,” which establishes the New York Climate Superfund. This endowment will be funded by energy companies that deal in gas, oil, and coal, and the money will finance “resiliency projects,” like initiatives to shore up the coast and mitigate flooding—because obviously as every progressive and mainstream media consumer “knows,” energy that comes from “fossil fuels” cause “climate change.”
As of now, a number of companies operating in New York have been hit with $75 billion in fines, which are to be paid into the fund over the span of a decade. Per the NY Post:
The oil giant Saudi Aramco of Saudi Arabia could be slapped with the largest annual assessment of any company — $640 million a year — for emitting 31,269 million tons of greenhouse gases from 2000 to 2020.
Aramco — formally known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co. — is owned by the Saudi Royal family.
The state-owned Mexican oil firm Petróleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, emitted 9,512 tons of CO2 and could face an $193 million assessment for generating 9,512 million tons of greenhouse gases.
Russia’s Lukoil could be assessed with a $100 million yearly fee for spewing 4,912 millions of CO2.
The 38 companies identified as carbon polluters include American petro giants such as Exxon and Chevron as well as Shell and BP in the UK, Total Energies IES in France, Petrobras in Brazil, BHP in Australia, Glencore in Switzerland, Equinor in Norway and ENI in Italy.
Another greedy, communistic money grab. What the left doesn’t get as they cheer on the theft is that...

You would think that she would do this in the summer so people don’t freeze when the power goes off.
She previously signed a law to force everyone to convert to electric heat without the infrastructure to do so. She’s hoping to freeze us to death.
I refuse to pay higher prices here in North Carolina so the energy companies can pay off New York Fines!
Raise the Prices in New York State to cover those fines. Don’t take it out of my paycheck!
Every dime of which will be passed on to the consumer and/or taxpayer.
Ummm...leave NY?
And if they get horsey about it, don’t sell there...
Messy, unwieldy and costly but better than paying extortion.
Hey, the majority (meaning NYC) voted for this. Now they're going to get it good and hard.
Interesting. This list of companies sorta looks like a list from the NYSE. I wonder what would happen to to DOW and S&P 500 if ALL of these companies delisted themselves? Just move to only being on the other exchanges in the world.
In other words, cease ANY and ALL operations within the state of NY.
New Yorkers voted for it. But consumers across the Nation will pay higher prices to pay for it.
Everyone should stop doing business with New York.
Just another tax on the “citizens” in the guise of funding some program making democrat donors rich. Just like the NYS surcharge for medical treatment.
What is the “NYS Surcharge” I see on my bill?
The “NYS Surcharge” you see on your bill is a tax on the hospital services that you receive. Under New York State’s Health Care Reform Act (HCRA), we are required to collect the surcharge and to pay it to New York State’s Department of Health. Some insurance carriers will pay the NY State Surcharge on your behalf, but this varies by insurance carrier. If your insurance carrier did not pay this tax or you do not have healthcare coverage, you are responsible for paying the NY State Surcharge and we are required to pay the collected Surcharge to the State. If you have questions about your bill, call the phone number on your billing statement.
Energy companies should announce they will cease doing business in NY or announce that every dime in addition to expenses will be passed to the consumer with a handling fee.
That will fix it quickly.
It’s a tax imposed by New York on all Americans. The Commerce Clause was written to prevent such ploys. Of course the Commerce Clause is now used to justify infinite Federal Authority.
Illegals congregate outside NYC shelters as cops warn of ‘migrant crime wave’
Check out the so-called migrant shelter. Note to consumers: Wyndham, the owner of Days Inn, is willing for the shilling.
The oil companies should immediately suspend fuel shipments to Albany, followed by NYC. Leave the red counties alone.
Why doesn’t NYS have the cajones to tax/fine the people buying these company’s products and using said products in their vehicles that do the so-called polluting?
“modeled after a federal law that holds polluters responsible for abandoned toxic-waste sites,”
Such laws should have been ruled unconstitutional long ago. They are, effectively, ex-post-facto laws. The companies did nothing illegal, then were punished after the fact.
How would NY state have the authority to tax activity beyond its borders?
NY. Ever creative in their ways of stealing money.
They should learn to cut their budgets first.
