Finland Seizes Ship After Undersea Cable Is Cut
The New York Times ^ | Dec. 26, 2024 Updated 1:11 p.m. ET | Johanna Lemola and Lynsey Chutel

The country’s prime minister said the incident, the latest in a series of disruptions to undersea infrastructure, underscored the danger of a so-called Russian shadow fleet.

The Finnish police on Thursday boarded an oil tanker that the authorities said they suspected was involved in damaging vital undersea cables. They suggested the tanker was part of a shadow fleet used by Russia to avoid Western sanctions.

The Estlink 2 submarine cable, which carries electricity between Finland and Estonia, was cut on Wednesday, Finland’s police said in a statement, the latest in a slew of disruptions to undersea infrastructure that are being investigated as acts of sabotage. The Finnish authorities said Thursday that four other cables carrying data also had been damaged.

A number of other vital undersea cables have been cut in recent months, raising fears that Russia might be waging a shadow campaign against NATO nations that have supported Ukraine in the face of Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Last month, two fiber-optic cables were cut in the Baltic Sea in what Germany’s defense minister described as an act of sabotage. One cable connected Finland and Germany; the other ran between Lithuania and Sweden — all members of the NATO alliance.

Russian ships have been reported in the Baltic and North Seas near areas where critical infrastructure lies beneath the waters, and dozens of Russian tankers have begun sailing under different flags to evade sanctions.

The police in Finland called the latest cable cuts “aggravated vandalism.” In a statement on Thursday, the police said authorities had seized the Eagle S tanker, which is registered in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. The ship was sailing from St. Petersburg, Russia to Port Said,...

I guess you do know the answers to post 15, and you choose Russia and their block of Russia, Communist China, Communist North Korea, and Iran.

Detailing the rhetoric started on this thread: an exceerpt from The View, posted by Jeffries....
LEADER JEFFRIES: Yeah. She has indicated that she is going to step in to the void that was tragically left by his killing and continue to be, you know, a force for good in the world. And here's the thing that— the battle between Ukraine and Russia is not just two countries fighting each other. This is an existential contest that is playing out all across the world between democracy and autocracy, between freedom and tyranny, between truth and propaganda. And the United States of America should always stand on the side of democracy, freedom and truth. And that's why we stand on the side of the Ukrainian people.

JOY BEHAR: So, you know, Trump has always been sweet on Putin. He really likes him. I mean, he didn't even mention Navalny until he finally did, and he compared himself to Navalny. I mean, the narcissism is beyond belief. Now, let me ask you something. What do you think Putin has on him? On Trump?

LEADER JEFFRIES: "STANDING BY UKRAINE IS STANDING BY AMERICA'S NATIONAL SECURITY INTERESTS" February 21, 2024 • Press Release

"Thus the "If you are against the Ukraine war you are a Putinista" demagoguery." And thus the "Trump has always been sweet on Putin."

No third of fourth perspective is allowed....

Obviously Russia. They have been up to this crap for a long time, and of course, it is in their interest.

From 2015 :

US Navy is worried Russia planning to cut the undersea cables that carry 95% of internet traffic

The presence of Russian submarines and spy ships near undersea cables carrying most global Internet communications has U.S. officials concerned that Russia could be planning to sever the lines in periods of conflict, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

The Times said there was no evidence of cable cutting but that the concerns reflected increased wariness among U.S. and allied officials over growing Russian military activity around the world.

The newspaper quoted naval commanders and intelligence officials as saying they were monitoring significantly greater Russian activity along the cables’ known routes from the North Sea to Northeast Asia and waters closer to the United States....

They are not “deeply entrenched.” In shallower areas it is not uncommon for them to be severed by dragging anchors.

Russia has been doing this crap long before the pipeline that Biden enabled them to have by trying to appease them by lifting sanctions.

Years before.

Knee-jerk Defenst of Russia for every Russian action as if they have no history is just stupid, and tiresome.

Russia’s ally Iran has been at it too, earlier this year:

Houthis knock out underwater cables linking Europe to Asia - report

The successful targeting of the four cables, which are believed to belong to the AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN systems, marks a serious disruption of communications between Europe and Asia.
Four underwater communications cables between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti have been struck out of commission in recent months, presumably as a result of attacks by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, according to an exclusive report in the Israeli news site Globes.

The successful targeting of the four cables, which are believed to belong to the AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN systems, marks a serious disruption of communications between Europe and Asia.

Most of the immediate harm will be absorbed by the Gulf states and India, Globes said.

The AAE-1 cable connects East Asia to Europe via Egypt, connecting China to the West through countries such as Pakistan and Qatar....

China has bern up to it too. And not because of any pipeline.

All this horseshit about Russia being a victim is just that. Comeplete horseshit, just manipulative nonsense to play on stupid people’s sympathies like all the other groups that play the victim card while engaging in terrorism.

Snip, from early 2023:

On the other side of the world, Moscow’s new Chinese allies are showing the same kind of interest in the undersea cables that run to Taiwan. Two of those cables were recently cut by Chinese vessels. The Chinese appear to be billing the actions as “accidents”. There is a strong suspicion that the actions were a dry run for a much broader attack on communication with Taiwan.

On February 2, 2023, a Chinese fishing vessel sailing close to the Matsu Islands severed one of the two cables, which connect the islands with Taiwan proper. Six days later, a Chinese freighter cut the second cable. The Matsu Islands, which belong to Taiwan, are now left with rudimentary communications...

NATO, the EU and globalist elite are not on "our" side.

Their agenda -- mass migration, the war they pushed in Ukraine, the green agenda -- are the enemy of both the American people and the people of Europe.

That's globalist after globalist leader in Europe countries has been losing elections.

Your commentary is worthless unless you acknowledge that there is battle between the globalist elite and the nationalist populace that want their leaders to their countries first.

We destroyed the Nord Stream pipelines.

We have assisted the Ukrainians are targeting civilians in both Russia and Ukraine, using them as human shields and attacking nuclear power plants, all war crimes.

Anyone more concerned about Russia than how corrupt our own government has become under Biden is as much the enemy as any Democrat.

NATO keeps on poking the bear, then seem surprised when they get bit.

Maybe if the bear had stayed in its own cave and had not attacked others.

The other perspective is that, as Behar said, Trump compared himself positively to Navalny. Implicitly as an activist against an autocratic system. Putin = an autocrat based on an oligarchy. Trumps enemies = an oligarchy.

Trumps opponents will toss any garbage at hand, only rarely conceding nuance, etc. Or their own nature.

Chihuahua. I see. Not actually human beings apparently. So Ok to ignore or squash as seems convenient to their natural masters.

If YOU were Estonian, and you heard yourself just now, what would you think?

This ... attitude, which you share with the Russian government, is why NATO exists.

Hello, Buwaya, royalist with the sincere hope in the return of the Bourbon dynasty to the throne of Spain and then more of Europe.

As a retired engineer living in Spain, you should know that an equal sign is used when both sides of the equation are fully equal. And since your dreamed of return of the Bourbon dynasty is a form of rule antithetical to President Trump, your formulation of those "equations" is polemic of a most simplified sort.

As a firm supporter of President Trump in these last three elections, it is likely he will surprise many. Perhaps even you. I am expecting to be surprised. Pleasantly so.
