Mystery Check
Posted on 12/26/2024 9:34:49 AM PST by FroggyTheGremlim
I Just got a check in the mail;
It's a very official-looking check just like an IRS refund, but we are NOt DUE any refunds.
Return address on the envelope is:
US Department of the Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service Philadelphia, PA
Check is printed: United States Treasury
Bunch of numbers
Kansas City, Mo
Has Statue of Liberty
Amount $1992.80
Made out to me AND my wife.
I have NO Idea what this is for, but I intend to deposit it.
Anybody else getting a mystery check like this?
Oh, I am expecting lots of wisecracks from FReepers, but I would really appreciate any help in tracking this down.

“Wait to bank until 2025. Trump tax rates will apply.”
Most likely they will vote to keep present rates.

Just deposit the check and wait to see if it pays, don’t overdraw on the check amount in case it doesn’t. Just give it a few days to pay.

Seriously folks, I would not deposit any check to my account until any questions I had about its provenance were resolved. Especially any item received from the US Government. You could end up being accused of theft or fraud. Or be held responsible for returning the funds plus penalties and interest if it was determined to be a legitimate error by the issuer.

I’d at least have the bank check it out for you. You have time to investigate. For your sake, I hope it’s genuine.

    Deposit it.
If it comes back, you know it’s better than the person who wrote it...

Cash it and hold the money, worse that can happen they want it back. I am sure a phone call will handle it.

They sometimes pull a trick of sending a check for a small amoun I can't imagine why they would want to sieze our account. I haven't done anything wrong, illegal or suspicious.
Except maybe being registered as a Republican in a solid Democrap city.
