I Just got a check in the mail;
It's a very official-looking check just like an IRS refund, but we are NOt DUE any refunds.
Return address on the envelope is:
US Department of the Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service Philadelphia, PA
Check is printed: United States Treasury
Bunch of numbers
Kansas City, Mo
Has Statue of Liberty
Amount $1992.80
Made out to me AND my wife.
I have NO Idea what this is for, but I intend to deposit it.
Anybody else getting a mystery check like this?
Oh, I am expecting lots of wisecracks from FReepers, but I would really appreciate any help in tracking this down.
I had heard on the local news a few days ago about over a million people will be receiving refund checks in the mail(or direct deposit) so this might be a legit check..you can google more about it it was something about the IRS sending out money based on your 2019 tax returns I believe..so you might be one of those people that received a check because you were owed money
Yes, you could sign the check over to me, and I'll take care of the matter.
Seriously, call the IRS and they'll tell you what it was for.
They sometimes pull a trick of sending a check for a small amount, and then when you deposit it seize the account. This looks a little high for this trick, but you might want to open a small account at another bank or S&L and deposit it there and wait a while and see what happens.

that is what Im referring to..but either way, make sure before you deposit ANYTHING that its legit
Take it to your bank and ask
Quick answer: Don’t do it until you verify its authenticity as genuine AND you know why it was issued.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Especially if it is made out in a way you aren’t familiar with from the Federal government. That should be a big red flag. Was a letter sent along with it?
I’m no authority. But I’d make an appointment with your bank, a tax attorney, or a state or Federal agency you may already deal with and trust and get to the bottom of it. If it’s real, you have some time.
Create an ID.me account for either spouse and look at the Account Transcript for the tax year. The refund will be on the Account Transcript if it is from the IRS.

You can also order an Account Transcript, Return Transcript, or Record of Account (Account and Return transcripts combined) by calling the automated IRS transcript order line at
1-800-908-9946 24/7. IRS address of record must be correct. Mailed in about 10 business days.
The treasury was sending out some checks to people who did not get “stimulus” checks during Covid. It might be that.
Do you have a web account with the IRS? It was a pain to set up (video call to verify my identity), but if you have it there should be a transaction record for this.
“Take it to your bank and ask”
There you go again, using common sense......you DO know where you are right? Lol!
There are about a million unused stimulus checks rolling out. This is a real thing most likely. However, many are being automatically deposited.
A million taxpayers will soon receive up to $1,400 from the IRSBut your check is bigger than $1,400, so that's probably not it.
December 23, 2024Approximately 1 million taxpayers will automatically receive special payments of up to $1,400 from the IRS in the coming weeks. The money will be directly deposited into eligible people's bank accounts or sent in the mail by a paper check.
The IRS said it's distributing about $2.4 billion to taxpayers who failed to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. People who missed one of the COVID stimulus payments or had received less than the full amount were able to claim the credit. But the IRS on Friday said it discovered many eligible taxpayers hadn't done so.
If I were you, I'd set the money aside in case you need to return it. Don't spend it until you are absolutely certain it is really yours. Do not despair -- it should take less than five years to confirm it's really yours after hundreds of phone calls and scores of hours talking to idiots who tell you "That's not my responsibility. You need to talk to somebody over in XYZ Department."
Of course cash it. Don’t deposit it into your checking account. It will leave a path back to you.
Thanks everybody Fewer wisecracks han I expected.
I’ll take it to the bank. The check looks authentic.
I’ll let you know when I find out
There is absolutely no documentation.
But we can sure use almost 2000 bucks! Maybe the eagle really shit on us.
Wait to bank until 2025. Trump tax rates will apply.
That’s the problem with common sense. It ain’t all that common
Seems to me the italicized/bolded part would indicate a fraud of some sort..
