Rashi's commentary on Genesis 1:2 --

I'd bet no one here has seen them sitting on top of the barn waiting for the babies to come out. Yet without herbivory, vegetative succession runs amok, at the expense of biodiversity, until it burns.

There are trade-offs you know. It's time we grew up and learned that environmental management is more complicated than our iconographic fantasies; it is a matter of competing interests and risks.
