107 Best Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time Ranked
LOOPER.com ^ | September 25, 2024 | DYLAN ROTH and LEO NOBORU LIMA

In the words of one great work of science fiction, "The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity, and the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty." Sci-fi itself is a genre that contains multitudes — space opera, time travel, dystopia, cyberpunk, apocalypse and post-apocalypse, just to name a few. Sci-fi has been the domain of Hollywood blockbusters and independent art films, presented as comedy and drama, used to paint bright futures or portents of doom.

On this list, you'll find permutations of every sort, spread across a variety of decades, countries, and languages. While entries on our list date back as far as 1927, we must confess a preference for the new — nearly half of the entries on our list were made in this century, as digital filmmaking and effects have lowered the barrier for producing quality sci-fi and allowed more storytellers to project their bold imaginings.

"...The Angry Red Planet...

That's the first movie I remember seeing. Went to the drive in with my parents when I was 7 or 8. It made an impact on me. Always wanted to see it again, but never ran across it.

I’ve seen 42.

“Mars Express” looks interesting.

My all-time favorite bad Sci-Fi flick is “Iron Sky.”

Should have been in that list. It’s certainly one of my favorites!

Don’t see The Mysterians on the list. Nor Battle in Outer Space.

Star Wars I should be light years ahead of any other scifi film, but it didn’t even make the list.

And where is Quatermass?
This is a silly list. I’ve never heard of 70% of the list anyway. Don’t know, don’t care; and all these years I thought I was pretty good with science fiction movies.

I almost walked out of the theater when I saw Alien. I also didn’t like 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was said that you had to read the book to understand it, which was a cop-out on the part of the movie maker.

I haven’t made a single music/art video in several years. Haven’t made ANY videos in over a year. But the person who interviewed me for the Night Before Christmas documentary sent me 50 minutes of source footage of my interview with permission to use it as I see fit. So I’ve been doing bits and pieces of organizing my own smaller documentary pieces of the history of the attribution conflict; literary proofs of Henry Livingston’s authorship and statistical proofs of Henry Livingston’s authorship. Used to hire narrators and I’m just not as good as any of them, so getting the narration down is the stumbling block I’m trying to get over. Need that to piece together the story from the answers to the various questions I was asked.

“Forbidden Planet” was way WAY ahead of its time. In fact its special effects including the electronic music, the Monster From The Id, and Robby the Robot is still cutting edge. To rank it at 91 is completely IDIOTIC. I remember seeing it at age eight and was SHOCKED at how advanced it was over ALL previous Sci-Fi films.

Any list without ‘Event Horizon’ in it is illegitimate.

I recall standing in line far too long for Star Wars, then being disappointed that is was so cartoon-like compared to 20o1. Not what I was hoping for.

Seemed to be a movie for kiddies, not hard core sci-fi.

I see you are a fellow MST3K fan. You know they’ve had a never ending live stream of shows on Twitch and YouTube for several months now. It’s always worth a visit.

Too much “recency” bias in that list.
