107 Best Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time Ranked
LOOPER.com ^ | September 25, 2024 | DYLAN ROTH and LEO NOBORU LIMA

Posted on 12/23/2024 12:46:02 PM PST by Red Badger

In the words of one great work of science fiction, "The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity, and the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty." Sci-fi itself is a genre that contains multitudes — space opera, time travel, dystopia, cyberpunk, apocalypse and post-apocalypse, just to name a few. Sci-fi has been the domain of Hollywood blockbusters and independent art films, presented as comedy and drama, used to paint bright futures or portents of doom.

On this list, you'll find permutations of every sort, spread across a variety of decades, countries, and languages. While entries on our list date back as far as 1927, we must confess a preference for the new — nearly half of the entries on our list were made in this century, as digital filmmaking and effects have lowered the barrier for producing quality sci-fi and allowed more storytellers to project their bold imaginings.

No Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, either.

What kinda horse 💩 list is this?! Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a cult classic! It was even on MeTV over the weekend!

For the love of all things Cinema, it was even Pia Zadroa's acting debut and she slayed the role of GirlMar!

No “Fifth Element”.

That’s a shame. It should have made the list, if only for entertainment value. Bruce Willis was good in the Fifth Element and also in 12 Monkeys.

The 12 Monkeys TV series did not compare to the movie. I suspect it was a set-up for the Wuhan virus.

The Evil Emperor Ming really got my attention. I never looked at the people who ran the Chinese restaurant again in the same way.

“For historical purposes, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells should be considered.”

Also Edgar Rice Burroughs. I enjoyed reading his John Carter novels. Did anyone see the 2012 movie John Carter?

I have around 6 bays of floor to ceiling books of scifi.

At one point in my life I had the complete set of James Blish's novelizations of Star Trek TOS - and Spock Must Die. (but I'm not a nerd)

I think we can conclude that the genre is played out.

You know that the filker Julia Ecklar wrote professional Star Trek novels?

I’m a dedicated Trekker and don’t consider myself a nerd. I headed our professional society for programming languages (SIGPLAN) and met Jean Sammet (COBOL), then head of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) at a Trek convention. Trekkers are quite respectable.

I saw it. It was all right. I enjoyed the television mini series they did of "The Martian Chronicles" with Rock Hudson better. The set and costume/makeup designers really pulled off a miracle despite the limited special effects available at the time.

Was really disappointed with the treatment Philip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" got when they tried to bring it to the smallish screen.

Lots of cartoon, monster movies, and superheroes.

Take those out and it’s a pretty decent compilation. The order is not what I would pick, but thats OK.

The Fifth Element was pretty lousy as sf, true, but it was a lot of fun. We still watch it when it comes on, especially on BBC America, which hardly cuts anything out.

I saw 12 Monkeys as a movie, never wanted to watch the TV series.
