‘Everyone’ is at risk: Gruesome flesh-eating bacteria spreads across Australia

A gruesome flesh-eating bacteria, thought to be transmitted by an iconic Aussie animal, is spreading in one state, and health experts warn “everyone” is at risk.

Victoria’s Health Department released a grim alert on Friday for Buruli Ulcer, which is a bacterial skin infection that damages soft tissue and can cause serious disfigurements.

“Lesions typically present as a slowly enlarging painless lump or wound which can initially be mistaken for an insect bite,” Victoria’s chief health officer Professor Ben Cowie said on Friday.

“Case numbers so far this year are higher compared to previous years.

“The disease is spreading geographically across Victoria and is no longer restricted to specific coastal locations.”

The department has now detected the disease in the Mornington Peninsula, Westernport, Bellarine Peninsula, East Gippsland, and Frankston and Langwarrin regions.

It has also been detected in the southeastern bayside suburbs – including the Surf Coast shire towns of Breamlea, Torquay, Anglesea, and Aireys Inlet, parts of Greater Geelong, and the inner-Melbourne areas of Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Brunswick West, Pascoe Vale South, Ascot Vale, and Strathmore.

Professor Cowie warned the disease could strike “everyone.”

“Disease can occur at any age, but Buruli ulcer notifications are highest in people aged 60 years and above in Victoria,” he said.

The department said the warmer months brought with them a higher risk of Buruli infections and it usually took between four to five months for an ulcer to develop following infection.

It is suspected possums and mosquitoes play a role in transmitting the disease.

“The disease is not transmissible from person to person, however, there is evidence that both mosquitoes and possums play a role in disease transmission in Victoria,” Professor Cowie.

How many biolabs do we have in Australia, and what is their purpose?

I guess the lesson here is... Don't mess with possums... Like why would you want to?

Looks like it’s time to herd the Native Australians into concentration camps again. It’s what tyrants do.

Think I’ll let the little critter eat ticks & mosquito and not make him a meal...

Opossums are generally safe to eat. However, like most wild game, these creatures can carry several germs and diseases. Some may possess a bacteria that causes tularaemia, an illness with symptoms similar to the flu. They can also harbor the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

To avoid foodborne illness caused by opossums, soak the meat in a salt-and-vinegar brine for at least 24 hours. This will help kill any bacteria that may be present. Once the meat is brined, cook it to a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees. These steps will ensure your meal is delicious and germ-free.

Thanks, I’ll do that next time I accidently hit a speed bump lol- I’ve never tried woodchuck or racoon, but I guess those are, or were staples on the menu not so long ago too. I’ve eaten tree rats before, but wasn’t crazy agout the flavor- prba ly woulda been much better had it brined for awhile. I tried it fried, which made it way too tough, and pressure cooked, which was much better, but still the flavor wasn’t all that great. Likely woulda been much better in a stew.

I think I’d turned into a vegetarian before eating a rat, groundhog, or a raccoon.

Heads up: There’s a roadkill raccoon on the road next our property. Still fresh if you can get there in time. 🤣🤣🤣

Lol, I’ll be right over. Used to watch the show swamp loggers I thunk it was, znd there were 2 brothers, mitch and his brother, can’t remember name, he died during the show- anyway, mitch was walking to town one day for groceries or something, and he came across a dead crow. Long story short, he brought it home and supposedly cooked it up (though I think it was all staged, adn not crow that he cooked), and ate it, “allegedly” lol.
