A gruesome flesh-eating bacteria, thought to be transmitted by an iconic Aussie animal, is spreading in one state, and health experts warn “everyone” is at risk.
Victoria’s Health Department released a grim alert on Friday for Buruli Ulcer, which is a bacterial skin infection that damages soft tissue and can cause serious disfigurements.
“Lesions typically present as a slowly enlarging painless lump or wound which can initially be mistaken for an insect bite,” Victoria’s chief health officer Professor Ben Cowie said on Friday.
“Case numbers so far this year are higher compared to previous years.
“The disease is spreading geographically across Victoria and is no longer restricted to specific coastal locations.”
The department has now detected the disease in the Mornington Peninsula, Westernport, Bellarine Peninsula, East Gippsland, and Frankston and Langwarrin regions.
It has also been detected in the southeastern bayside suburbs – including the Surf Coast shire towns of Breamlea, Torquay, Anglesea, and Aireys Inlet, parts of Greater Geelong, and the inner-Melbourne areas of Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Brunswick West, Pascoe Vale South, Ascot Vale, and Strathmore.
Professor Cowie warned the disease could strike “everyone.”
“Disease can occur at any age, but Buruli ulcer notifications are highest in people aged 60 years and above in Victoria,” he said.
The department said the warmer months brought with them a higher risk of Buruli infections and it usually took between four to five months for an ulcer to develop following infection.
It is suspected possums and mosquitoes play a role in transmitting the disease.
“The disease is not transmissible from person to person, however, there is evidence that both mosquitoes and possums play a role in disease transmission in Victoria,” Professor Cowie.

Trump got elected so things didn’t go as planned.
From the WHO: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/buruli-ulcer-(mycobacterium-ulcerans-infection)
- Buruli ulcer is a chronic debilitating disease caused by an environmental Mycobacterium ulcerans.
- It often affects the skin and sometimes bone and can lead to permanent disfigurement and long-term disability.
- The mode of transmission is not known and there is no prevention for the disease.
(The original article thinks it is possum poop that is spreading the disease)
It took 11 paragraphs for the NYP to tell us what the suspect animal(s) are, but then again the NYP can’t tell a girl from a boy. Off topic but this more proof that the DoED needs to be shut down for good.
I’ve read that everything in Australia will kill you.
Australia’s Deep State has racked up quite the body count...
But at least their doing it for the New World Order
Where th F is my N95 mask?
Technically I’m Australian but don’t live there. I’m not trying to kill you.
Good to know. 😁
we aim to please
I’m guessing simple vigilance would do a lot.
If the disease starts topically, one wonders if a mosquito bite is treated immediately with neosporin and a bandaid would be effective.
Mycobacterium ulcerans.
Hard to catch. Highly treatable.
Next slide, please.
Possum poop and mosquito bites according to the article
I believe it is true that all lifeforms in Australia want to kill you.
The drugs they use against Buruli are not found in Neosporin.
Currently they are using Rifampin plus clarithromycin or Rifampin and Moxifloxacin.
The “experts” don’t really know how the bacteria are transmitted but contaminated water, mosquito bites, possums poop are possibly transmission modes.
The bacteria are in the same class of organisms (mycobacterium ) which cause TB and/or leprosy.
Slow growing little creeps.
Hydrogen peroxide may be helpful as a topical disinfectant and there is some evidence that 6% acetic acid(vinegar is about 5% acetic acid) is a good disinfectant.
One problem is that lesions are so slowly growing it would be difficult to know how effective these treatments are....
One thing to notice: the continual mixing of infected vectors into human society is gonna’ spread lots of diseases.
The continual drumbeat of the idea that diversity and cohahabitation of diseased entities (animal, plant, human) as a necessary policy to avoid “racism” or provincialism or “stick in the mud” prudery may soon be overturned by rising morbidity and mortality rates.
FYI and Freegards.
I thought possums were disease free. They also keep the mosquito population down.
QUESTION. Are these Bill Gates genetically modified mosquitoes?
“A gruesome flesh-eating bacteria, thought to be transmitted by an iconic Aussie animal”
It is suspected possums and mosquitoes play a role in transmitting the disease.
So which one ism the iconic Aussie animal?
Those are tough bugs; by the class of which I am concluding they bear fungal properties? How is that expressed?

As intended.
You didn't mention it, but the fad in "connecting corridors" for wildlife is also a pathway for contagion (Reed Noss should be diced into a bucket for that one). It also induces hybridization that effectively extirpates species (such as wolves) whose genetic distances were maintained by aboriginally-effected niche separation. Val Geist was big on that one (miss him, bigtime).

Or not. Liberills seem immune to information when it threatens their primacy they believe to be sustained by ideology. It's especially when that gets fuzzed it becomes a problem.
