Donald Trump’s team has told European officials that the incoming US president will demand Nato member states increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP, but plans to continue supplying military aid to Ukraine.
During his White House campaign, Trump vowed to cut off aid to Ukraine, force Kyiv into immediate peace talks, and leave Nato allies undefended if they failed to spend enough on defence — spooking European capitals.
But in a boost for allies deeply concerned over their ability to support and protect Ukraine without Washington’s backing, Trump now intends to maintain US military supplies to Kyiv after his inauguration, according to three other people briefed on the discussions with western officials.

IIRC it’s 2% now. It seems that 5% is a big jump. Maybe settle for 3.5%...or even 3%.
Art of the deal.
Some in NATO also want to return to Cold War military budgets, Poland is close to 5%.
It used to be that only the UK spent even 2% (of the NATO countries). And the UK has very little military capability.
It’s five percent or we pull out of NATO,
NATO must cease to exist. It outlived its usefulness after the Warsaw Pact dissolved.
Hate to say it, but it looks like we're still in for a foreign policy of endless wars.
this guy is the jack hammer of freedom
I’d rather see this kind of leveraged approach than to just yank everything and see what happens. FAFO isn’t always the best approach. But getting the EU countries to step up is essential and he’s the only one who will do it.
Why would Ukraine need military aid after Trump takes office. He’s going to end the war on Inauguration Day, right? Or the day after.
Leveraging to keep the cost to American taxpayers down are they willing to do that it would devastate their welfare states.
Putin’s unhinged nuke threats and missile duel nonsense didn’t intimidate President Trump.
How much do we spend? I have no idea.
No. Go for five.
Putin is unstable.
They’ll agree to five but won’t honor it.
С Новым годом!
