Canadians waited longer than ever for medical treatment in 2024, says the Fraser Institute.
This year’s edition of its annual survey of physicians from across Canada reports a median wait time of 30 weeks from referral by a family doctor to consultation with a specialist, and then from the consultation to actual treatment.
The 30-week wait is the longest ever recorded by the Institute — longer than the 27.7 weeks in 2023, 20.9 weeks in pre-pandemic 2019, and 222 per cent longer than the 9.3 weeks in 1993, when it began tracking wait times.
“While most Canadians understand that wait times are a major problem, we’ve now reached an unprecedented and unfortunate milestone for delayed access to care,” said Bacchus Barua, director of health policy studies at the Fraser Institute and co-author of “Waiting Your Turn: Wait Times for Health Care in Canada, 2024.”
The independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank released the new survey Thursday.
“Long wait times can result in increased suffering for patients, lost productivity at work, a decreased quality of life, and in the worst cases, disability or death,” said Mackenzie Moir, senior policy analyst at the Fraser Institute and study co-author.

Lots of illegal aliens clogging up the works.

Assisted suicide care is quiet quick and easy .
Canada Death care hopes all over 60 choose that option .
Mostly Blood sucker Chinas and Indians
A 30 week wait for health care in most cases is really not having health care.
But it’s FREEEEEE!
Your taxes are outrageous, but your medical is cheap!
My wife recently fell ill and spent 4 days in the ICU.
She saw specialists. My end bill was $1100. I pay for her
insurance monthly,
I spent a day in the ICU and a day in a day room.
My bill, zero. Military service ( Vietnam era vet)
paid it all.
Granted I’m a small percentage of the population,
but if you want society to help you, you have to make some sacrifices to justify that help.
Just because you are a a$$ that votes for Democrats doesn’t we all have to pay your bills!
Let’s hear it for socialized medicine!
Thank you for your service, welcome home.
As intended with socialized medicine ......... If Trump seals the boarder for Canuck health care vacationers then maybe these nitwits in Canada will have the awakening they need.
My god, how many man-tools are there in Canada like Truedough to have bollixed up the country like this?
A lot of them cross the border into the US for wait times of around 3 or so days ...
Socialism. We are headed that way.
I don’t know where the hell in the US has a 3 day wait. I normally have 2 to 3 months for orthopedic, neurology, or other specialty.
I’ve read reports that they call for an appointment and usually they’re just several days out. Not sure of your condition but I only had a couple days wait for an MRI on my arm.
Canadian Healthcare Service ... where people go to die in the waiting room.
Beimg diagnosed with cancer in Canada is a likely death sentence. Imagine your wife’s GP finds a suspicious breast lump during a routine physical. Under this system the cancer could be in mestases before any definitive cancer treatment is started.
It’s a frequent approach to things to point at Canada’s long waits as the proof that govt healthcare is horrible.
But . . . have a look at Germany and the Netherlands.
Waits far less than those in the US.
Can-nada is a third world country. There is NOTHING to envy about Can-nada, NOTHING!
Living in New York State, I have been to Can-nada many times. Not lately. It is SOOOOOO expensive now. Also to go very far into Can-nada you need your passport. I don’t have a current passport and am not getting one to visit 3rd world Can-nada.
They are almost a Communist country now. No rights, government control over you about your speech, even your life. Euthanasia is legal.
F-CK Can-nada.
True. Cleveland Clinic does a very robust business taking care of wealthy Canadians from across the lake. I think Mayo in Minnesota does the same, maybe others.
