Arkansas governor calls for cutting junk food from SNAP (No more Soda)

December 11, 2024 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders sent the following letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary-Designate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary-Designate, Brooke Rollins, regarding reforms to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)…

Dear Mr. Kennedy and Mrs. Rollins,

As you know, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a $113 billion federal program designed to support low-income families with food assistance. Unfortunately, this “Nutrition Assistance” program is undermining the health of millions of Americans, on the taxpayer’s dime, by encouraging families to eat highly processed, unhealthy junk food.

In fact, soda, unhealthy snacks, candy, and dessert account for nearly 23 percent, or $25 billion, of all SNAP purchases. Given the relationship between junk food and poor health, our federal food assistance policies are fueling obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and a wide range of chronic health conditions across America...

As someone who believes in the Trump Administration’s unifying, aspirational vision for the future, the time has come to support American farmers and end taxpayer-funded junk food.

As Secretaries, I ask that you work collaboratively across the Administration to prohibit the sale of junk food in SNAP and end taxpayer-funded junk food. I also wish to notify you of my intent to pursue a SNAP Waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service that would support fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and protein and prohibit using SNAP for junk food.

Together, we can, and we will, Make America Healthy Again.

Cut SNAP altogether.

There was a time when people used to assess their financial situation before making babies. And they also used to save for a rainy day.

All of the various kinds of welfare has dumbed down the population to not make those kind of wise decisions. The masses have too much trust in lying, broke, corrupt government.

Not speaking specifically to Sarahs plan. Id really have to see more.

Do you remember when Iowa tried something like this a few years back?

I dont know if it was corruption or idiocy but that version would have done the opposite as far as health went.

It seems this is a conversation that conservatives are interested in having but unfortunately every retard comes out of the woodwork and every corruptocrat manipulates them into enshrining in law the exact opposite of what was initially stated as the goal.

The reason that they added junk food is they had a pity story about how a mom couldn’t buy a birthday cake for their kid. So instead of adding a cake a month, they opened all foods to food stamps.

That would be a GREAT start.

Next, if she’s really concerned about health, eliminate anything else in addition to chips made with PUFAs (oily unsaturated fatty acids). Obesity, diabetes, CVD, and dementia would all drop. And it would further expose the mega-food industry, and perhaps motivate them to produce healthier food.

Just eliminate SNAP and EBT cards and go back to the pre-Food Stamp system of providing a monthly allotment of basic food commodities to the needy.

I’m tired of watching slackers and illegals who cannot even speak English using EBT cards to buy expensive foods (like high end steaks) that we cannot afford.

We watch every purchase and buy generic label foods while people with EBT cards check out with cart loads of name brand items and the best cuts of meat.

Our own government seems to hate taxpaying Americans and treats us as the lowest priority.

No more cash benefits for food.

In 1973 a prof in college told us that if people *need* (key word, need) help, you give it to them “in kind”, NOT money. If they need food you give them bags of beans, rice, meat, vegetables. You do not give them money to buy whatever they desire.

The original “logic” behind giving welfare people money was that they would learn how to manage money and fend for themselves. That giving them food was demeaning and taught them nothing. Yeah, well, perhaps a little humility is a good thing. Might foster a desire to get off the dole.

Snap recipients ought to be on a diabetic diet, because they’re as long as they all going to be there someday they might as well try to avoid it.

If SNAP cards are used to buy junk food why couldn’t that lead to future lawsuits?

When was that?

Look up birth rates by year before and during the Great Depression. Before welfare, and before abortion was a thing, people figured out how to keep from making babies they couldn't afford to feed. Of course, exceptions were families like farming families who were self-sustaining even during the depression. (i.e. my paternal grandparents on a farm made tons of babies both before and after WW2)

After the Depression and WW2, the baby boom generation was created to make up for lost time not just during WW2, but also the Depression. (i.e. my maternal grandparents in a suburb were limited to just 2 kids because by they had held out during the Depression to just 1 kid, and by the time WW2 was over, my grandmother decided just 1 more kid was enough before she was too old).

Those kind of scenarios played out all over the country. Just about anybody who didn't live on a self-sustaining farm lowered their baby making during the depression. This was before government became the rewarder for dumb decision making.
