A senior Canadian official is threatening to cut off electricity to some 1.5 million Americans and ban the import of US-made beer and liquor as part of a potential trade war with the incoming Trump administration.
Doug Ford, the premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, suggested retaliating against possible tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose on products from Canada.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers, Ford predicted that there is a “100%” chance that Trump will make good on his pledge to slap a 25% tariff on all products that are imported from north of the border.
In response, Ford proposed to “cut off” millions of Americans living along the northern frontier from Ontario’s energy exports, according to Global News.
“It would turn off the lights to a million-and-a-half Americans,” Ford told Global News. “If they come at us we have to stand up for Canadians, we have to stand up for Ontarians.”
Canada is the nation’s No. 1 exporter of energy to the US, which spends around $3 billion annually for Canadian electricity, which is generated using hydropower.
Last year, Canada exported approximately 33.2 million megawatt hours of electricity to the US — the most of any country though it still accounted for less than 1% of total US energy consumption.
Ontario exports energy to border states including Michigan and New York.
Ontario government officials told Global News that Ford is mulling “escalation maneuvers” that are still being worked out.

I am not a great fan of Canadian large brewers. However, Canada as the USA has a thriving micro brewery business. These micro breweries turn out some fine Ales as do we.
I lived in the UK for a few years. When I returned home to the USA our beers really were bad, this was in 1980. With the advent of Micro Breweries we now brew beer the equal and better. The alcohol content of American Micro Breweries tend to be a little higher than the UK beers.
Also enjoyed Ballantine and Olympia too.
All the good beers are gone ... A lot of folks like the craft beer. New Belgium brewry in Fort Collins makes a beer called Ranger. It tastes EXACTLY like the Ballantine India Ale from the 1960s.
These days I hardly have a beer.
I used to drink a lot of British beers, hard to find now. Whitbread’s, John Courage, Double Diamond. Can’t seem to find them anymore, out of business? Now, mostly American micro-brews and some Hoegarrden a Belgium wheat. But about half as much as the good ole days.
What a blast from the past. I remember the “Chug-a-mugs”.
Go ahead, Goathead. Do whatever your dumb hoser butt thinks is right. ROTFL!
Apologies. I’ll do more research and repost/reply after.
After a quick review it’s clear that you are not wrong. I send redwood logs to a local mill. It’s a rather specialized market (decks). In fact, any fir has to be sent to distant mills and the value to me is about zero. I cut some to open the canopy for redwood. Please accept my statement as not a ‘bald-faced lie’ but an ignorant one. I’ll study further.

That’s ok. Biden showed us how to handle that with FEMA in North Carolina. I’m sure NY will be fine.
What a moron.
First, sure, cut the supply off, go ahead. Forego the billions of dollars. We’ll figure out a way to reroute energy from elsewhere. And what does he think will happen respective to people in those border States, like Michigan, if they went without power because he cuts it off? What does this idiot think will happen? They will cut off all roads to Canada. Does he realize how long it would take to be devastating to the Canadian economy? It’s many billions of dollars worth PER DAY.
As a country that is dependent on the USA, both economically and militarily, the last thing that he should be threatening are things he can’t afford and are close to an act of war - all because we want to change tariffs, as though there’s none, each way, today.
Trump will wipe the floor with this idiot.
Ha ha ha! Ooh, I’ll bet Trump is really scared! What a joke! For anything Canaduh threatens, Trump can do a hundred times worse to them. I admire their bragadocia, though; pretty good for someone with little or no power.
No worries. New York and Michigan will switch over to their windmills and solar farms and export their excess to Canada.<sarc
That you were parroting misinformation is not your fault, and I thank you for researching further. I may have overreacted somewhat as I have heard those lies and refuted them for years, and I truly grow weary of hearing them.
Have a great day, and Merry Christmas
This is a great skit with John Candy and Joe Flaherty.

We used to call “stale” beer “skunky” - because light, and time, has a deleterious effect, which is why most beer bottles are dark glass.
