Medically-assisted dying – also known as voluntary euthanasia – accounted for 4.7% of deaths in Canada in 2023, new government data shows.
The country's fifth annual report since euthanasia was legalised in 2016 showed around 15,300 people underwent assisted dying last year after being successful in their applications.
The median age of this group was more than 77. The vast majority – around 96% - had a death deemed "reasonably foreseeable", due to severe medical conditions such as cancer.
In the small minority of other cases, patients may not have been terminally ill, but sought an assisted death due to a long and complicated illness that had significantly impacted their quality of life.
Canada is among a few countries that have introduced assisted dying laws in the past decade. Others include Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Austria.
In Canada, consenting adults can request medical assistance in dying from a healthcare provider if they have a serious and irremediable medical condition.
Some provisions are in place, including a requirement of having two independent healthcare providers confirm that the patient is eligible before their request is approved.
More than 320,000 people died in Canada in 2023, and 15,300 of those deaths - about one in 20 - were medically assisted.
The figures released on Wednesday by Health Canada show that the rate of assisted dying in Canada increased by nearly 16% in 2023. This number is a sharp drop from the average increase of 31% in previous years.
The report cautioned that it is too early to determine what caused the rate to slacken.
For the first time, the report delved into race and ethnic data of those who died by euthanasia.

How many of them have been “migrants”?
Government-run healthcare WILL kill you
What is now voluntary will become to be mandatory.
The ones seeking out euthanasia are the pasty white descendants of western europeans who colonized the region. Those not participating in this cultural fad are their foreign and fertile ‘guests’.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Canada!
Soylent Green???
If you lived in Fidelito’s O Canada, you’d do MAID too.
Do they harvest organs before death is finalized?
Probably close to 80% here with how we do morphine etc. during hospice or last days in a facility.
I enjoyed every moment I spent in Canada, but among the natives, some have that weird sadness, that ennui you recognize but can’t name it. Fatalism is as close to the right word as you can get.
This Canadian TV ad promoting assisted suicide only features white people.
That's odd, considering how TV ads normally feature so much diversity.
Well, they DO live in Nazi Canuckistan.
malpractice coincidentally abated
Yes, very odd, Thanks for pointing it out Fellas!
Support human life—from conception to natural death—and hopefully eternal salvation!
Dear Crime Minister Castreau;
As the man(?) who has single handedly done more to change a reasonably healthy economy and reasonably sane society in Canada, into the economically and societally broken Canaduh that it now is, you must be very proud of your accomplishment. I am sure that you despair deeply, and cannot understand, why Canadians would not want you to keep on destroying our society and economy.
Being so low in the polls must be a terrible toll on you; suicidal thoughts MUST be running through your head. In a certain way, suicide can be difficult to accomplish, as it takes a certain courage and strength of will to end one’s life.
I sympathize with your struggle, and feel your pain. Might I suggest that you make use of the ‘Medical Assistance in Death (MAiD)’ legislation that you brought into law. That law will help you overcome the fear of killing yourself, as there will be trained, helpful professionals with you every step of the way, to aid you all the way to the end of your journey. I, and many Canadians, would be so very proud of you, if you chose MAiD.
‘Assisted dying now accounts for one in 20 Canada deaths‘
My gosh, how bad is it up there?
Move South, get some sun, you’ll feel better…
So Canada is good at something?
Well look at the bright side, 19 out of 20 are still dying a horrible lingering painful death, and not getting out of it this easily.
You do realize that there needs to be a valid medical reason to apply, you can’t just walk into some office and say, “kill me now, I am tired of living.”
That is only going to happen if Trudeau can get a majority. And there will be lots of business if so. I will be first in line.
Oh, also, yes we’re good at something — passing the damn baton in the 4 x 100 relay. Try it yourselves, it’s not that difficult.
