For many years, I've been describing what my first act would be should I ever be elected President of the United States. Granted that's unlikely in the extreme; as someone once said, "If nominated, I will not run, if elected, I will not serve." I don't want the job, but were I somehow thrust into it, my first act would be this:
Visit every office, every agency, every anteroom that contained employees that report to the Executive Branch. I would ask every employee therein, from directors to janitors, two questions:
"What is your purpose here?"
"What are you doing right now?"
Anyone who could not answer those questions to my satisfaction would be dismissed on the spot.
Now, cometh the DOGE. Granted they can only recommend; Elon and Vivek can't go in and start firing people. But at least one Democrat congressman, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, thinks that some federal employees may be heading for the exits already, perhaps anticipating their dismissal.

It would take longer than your lifetime’s span to interview every federal employee.
The downside is
<><>they’ll all be collecting mega-pensions
<><>getting Cadillac healthcare and life insurance......
<><>plus no-show six-figure govt salaries.
“What are you doing right now?”
Answering stupid questions now let me get back to work.
Why delay?
1. Would we notice?
2. See 1 above.
WINNING !
The crap those govt employees pull is amazing. They file paperwork claiming years of work they never did to boost their pensions and get to 30 years retirement faster, for example.
When Reagan was elected I kidded one, “What are you going to do now?” “Presidents come and go, but we are always here” was his reply.
Great!
Don’t need to. If theywere doing no work it was their boss’ job to monitor and fire.
Fire the bosses — they will turn.
My day 1 action:
Fire EVERYONE I have the ability to.
They may reapply for the fewer jobs I allow afterwards. The useless and political hacks (same thing) will not be back.
Told this to Ted Cruz in early 2016.
Exactly.
Fire virtually everyone a la Musk at X. Don’t give cause, don’t give time, don’t give a reason.
Just do it, because you have the power. Use it.
No downside.
Takes too long.
Just fire everybody.
Harry Browne-libertarian. “I would tell 50% of the workers they will be fired in one year and if they quit tomorrow I’ll pay them for 2 years”.
It would take longer than your lifetime’s span to interview every federal employee.
I hope it’s 10s or even 100s of thousands.
“Visit every office, every agency, every anteroom that contained employees that report to the Executive Branch.”
There won’t be anyone there. 94% of fed workers are goofing off at home. The easiest thing to do is a reduction in force with heavy emphasis at the management level. I would start at 10%. Monitor vital services. Then increase the RIF until you strike the bone.
ESPECIALLY! ICE and border patrol agents who are still shuttling illegal aliens in right now. At this point they could stop; by the time they got fired Trump would be in.
