Disturbed adaption of Simon and Garfunkel.
He's a trained cantor, so his musical background is pretty deep.
Love this version.
Saw this years ago. Killer! Like Johnny Cash’s version of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt.” Absolute raw power.
Trent Reznor when asked about Cash’s version said that Cash owned it now. I took it to mean that there was nothing Reznor could do to make it his song again. Forever more, people would think of Cash even though Reznor wrote the song and was the original singer.
Both better than their originals.
Song was about people not communicating with each other. The oxymoronic condition of the “sound of silence”....strong vocal. Black and white video effective for mood. Video images were “meh”....having a boat cross some type off stygian river to communicate with the other side didn’t hone in on the notion that the sound of silence is a permanent social feature for almost all cases. Offers of communication is sometimes met with withdrawal and hostility, usually disinterest.
Puncturing his chin with metal made him look like he was trying to be “relevant” to the then current viewers. Like sporting bell bottoms, paisley headband, long hair, and granny glasses in the 1960’s..
Verdict: B+ for song delivery, B for video quality, C for muddying up the message, C- for making lyrics more temporal rather than timeless.
P.S....missed the irony in the line about “people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made”...would certainly apply to today’s current obsession and slavish devotion to electronic images and the device designers and content producers. I mean waiting overnight in long lines
for the ability to buy the newest iPhone....really....
As always, IMHO..
flame on if necessary...
Yea, this is in my playlist. The first version did not make the list but it does sometimes play when I listen to my other playlists.
Love this version and what a powerful voice.
Thanks for posting.
A surprising number of cover songs are better than the originals. I find enjoyment over songs redone in different styles.
My cheap Chinese knock off version had nothing on it. No audio.
Right. I saw the clip of Reznor saying that. He showed honest humility with a most sincere compliment to Cash. I think he was honored that the icon, that was Cash, covered his work.
Dolly Parton admitted it.
This one gets me in the feels every time I hear it.
I have seen Disturbed 4 times. A great show!
I’m not crazy about their newer stuff but the early albums are heavy!!!
Paul Simon himself has praised this remake of his song. In a Howard Stern interview in 2023, Simon says he contacted the singer, David Draiman, after the cover was released to tell him how much he liked it.
It also covers the plight of deaf people...if I may be too obvious. Sort of became a personal anthem for me when I woke to find the surgeons had to remove my larynx to get all the cancer.
Most of us never dwell on the good things we have and take for granted.
Amazing how relevant this song still seems to be. Testimony to Simon’s artistry. Great rendition. Seems to convey the rage and angst just beneath the surface of our divided society. Hadn’t heard this so thanks for pointing!
That is the constant urging from the hosts of American Idol...MAKE IT YOUR OWN!
Nothing compares to U and I will always love you come to mind.
LOVE this version! Been around for a minute.
I also like the “sped up” version, used on a lot of shorts.
Equally as good.
