A group of special-needs students was denied service at Cracker Barrel in Maryland, with the mother of an autistic boy expressing outrage after the restaurant's manager told them not to come back.
Stacey Campbell said her non-verbal son Jojo, 9, was refused sit-down service at the restaurant in Waldorf on Tuesday along with 10 other special-needs children.
Jojo was on the trip with his school's community-based instruction (CBI) program, which gives special-needs children the opportunity to go on field trips and participate in educational activities.
According to an email from a teacher, the kids and the seven adults with them were denied service at the Cracker Barrel even though they called beforehand to confirm they did not need a reservation.
The email said that the decision had nothing to do with the children's behavior and that the manager told the group not to come back for any future field trips.
'So, if you’re telling them to take us off the list, then they're not welcomed there. Why?' Campbell told WJLA.
The restaurant only allowed the group to place a to-go order and made the students sit in the back of the eatery, where they waited for more than an hour, the teacher's email said.
'We did take the food back to the school and the students enjoyed their lunch and were so well behaved,' it stated.
'I am however disappointed about this experience and am still stunned that this happened in a public setting.'
The email also noted that Cracker Barrel staffers were very rude to the group.
The concerned mother shared the letter on social media to bring attention to the situation, sparking hundreds of reactions.

Ya think??
I don’t believe a word of this. Blacks have often claimed racism against CB, and many other restaurants, only to have their own horrid behavior be exposed much later on.
Whether or not Cracker Barrel staff were inconsiderate or whether the handicapped children misbehaved, the last thing that chain needs is additional bad publicity. First, in caving in to black protesters Cracker Barrel went woke. Given that their clientele is largely older rural and exurban whites, their woke attitudes hurt their business. Plus, there are rumors of lower quality food and less than stellar waiters.
I’m betting the Restaurant had no idea that 17 people were coming at them.
i detest cracker barrel ... been there exactly once ... had a sizzling platter ... asked to have gravy omitted because i’m celiac and the gravy would make me violently ill ... no can do said waitress, we’re not allowed to make special orders ... i demanded to see the manager and raised hell in a VERY LOUD VOICE and asked if it was their policy to poison their customers ... manager backed down ... waitress was delighted her asshole boss caved ... wrote letter to corporate ... cheap-ass corporate sent me ONE lousy free breakfast coupon ... ONE ... i threw it away ... never went back ... never said another good thing about cracker barrel ... F em ...
“and they were so well behaved”....says it all...
Just pull the short bus up to the drive-thru at Mickie D’s and load ‘em up on carbs and sugar.
The other side of the story will emerge in about 5 days and we will find out there is more to this.
A nine year old who is unable to speak is severely retarded, yes?
The 17 came in for sit-down meal. When they were not seated, they were allowed to place a to-go order.
From the article, the group called ahead and were informed no reservation was required.
The title of this article is deceptive. Therefore I doubt the story behind the rest of it.
Too much is missing. I think some people want a big discrimination payoff.
Apparently they called ahead and were told they didn’t need a reservation.
Did they say there were 17 of them??
Okay, read the excerpt. I’m not going to daily mail. My guess is the group didn’t explain how many were in the party and what they may need in the way of special attention when they asked about needing reservations. When they arrived, they couldn’t seat the entire party and had to wait for other customers in line. Or they could get to-go orders. The group leaders were expressly unhappy and that is what drew the ban from the manager. Then used the kids as pawns when telling their story to the press.
The article doesn’t say, just that they called ahead and didn’t need a reservation.
It seems to me that if you were calling for a reservation, the number of the party would have come up.
I think we need to learn more about it before we pass judgment.
If you read between the lines the restaurant said come on in but when the class trip arrived they only had half the dining room staffed and couldn’t seat them all.
My interpretation is you had some Karen chaperones got upset. If they had actual quotes/proof they don’t tell that to the report. Just a buncha “I felt, they were rude” emotional quotes.
Autistic.
My nephew is autistic and has ADHD.
My brother NEVER takes his son out to eat.
Too much stimulation and nobody has a good time.
I can't imagine 17 kids and their various issues.
I agree, there is much more to this story.
I daresay it sounds like some kind of set-up and rage-bait to get readers angry .
Too bad, the Cracker Barrel staff undoubtedly would have gotten a hell of a tip if they’d been able to seat the group.
It’s Waldorf MD. They have drive-thru liquor stores...just sayin’.
