What Muggers Look For
There are actually several signs that muggers look for in their victims before they strike. There is of course no real “handbook” that muggers use to guide them in search of their victims, although there is a loose set of rules gleaned from repeatedly mugging people. They also get groomed for the job by their more experienced “mentors” if they’re already part of a gang, or if they join one while in prison.
These are some of the characteristics they look for in people before they strike:
The “Weird Walkers”
When picking a potential victim, muggers will first look at the way a person walks. Much like the way predators scope their target from a herd of prey animals, muggers look for anyone who walks in an “unusual” way, one that denotes weakness. This includes slouching, dragging feet, or eyes that are cast downward instead of eye-level.

It was a great credit to you - and to his rearing of you - that he trusted you that way at such a young age.
Yep, especially in the big cities.
South America, too. I used to travel to Argentina on business and while it was a lovely place, we did have to stay vigilant for pickpockets and purse snatchers.
Wow, this is the best article I’ve seen on this topic. I just sent it to my late 20’s daughter who lives in Denver.
Thanks again.
Those are nice.
The last time I went to jury duty, I met an elderly Black man who made canes and walking sticks with elaborately hand-carved tops; a real artisan and craftsman.
When hubby and I visited Detroit (my hometown) many moons ago, we attended a waterfront festival after spending a few hours in Greektown and the casinos. It was getting dark and we had to walk back towards Greektown to get our car. I advised him to “walk big and walk loud”.
When I travel I did just that. A fake wallet filled with Chilean pesos and fake credit cards from junk mail. Never been robbed or attacked but you never know.
The last week on the job before I retired I appropriated a piece of doublexx heavy 1 inch ss pipe. With the use of a torch and a bending machine I made the perfect cane weapon.
I’ve lived on Capitol Hill since 1979, when it was a little more affordable than it is now. The streets used to be livelier back in Marion Barry, Mitch Snyder and Rayful Edmond days. I learned a long time ago to rely on my white supremacist x-ray vision.
A little situational awareness goes a long way. So does not staggering around drunk in the wee hours of the morning, like some people I knew back in the day.
My mother-in-law traveled extensively in Europe before she passed away. She always had what she called the “bank of butt”. It was a body pocket (like a fanny pack but flat) that she strapped to herself not visible under her clothing, but contained all the important stuff
There used to be one that I believe was called the ‘Bosom Buddy’ - a pocket on a sort of cloth lanyard that you wore like a necklace and stuffed into your bra :-)
Nice!
Not many muggers in Sandy, Utah. Too likely to end up dead.
When I walk in public, I stand up as erect as I can, head up, eyes forward, shoulders back, and keep track of my surroundings. If outside, I wear sunglasses so it is harder to see where I am looking.
I do all of the same. I watch everyone. I've notice that I get more looks now that I am older, but I'm still as mean.
That’s my approach - I no longer have any reason to go into the city.
Awesome!
It’s been a while since I’ve needed mine- when my back acts up. Or, I can just take it with me when I go walking. It’s made of hickory. Not likely to break easily.
Sorry for her passing. But, I'm glad she traveled before she died.
Had a couple of guys follow me into a grocery store once. I went down a couple of aisles and noticed they were still following. So I abruptly turned around and passed right between them. They seemed to suddenly be very interested in stuff on the shelves. No further following.
I had a friend from High School who always wanted to use a silver-handled walking stick when she got old. Unfortunately, she died relatively young; but in her honor, when I’m old(er) I’m getting me a silver-handled cane or walking stick.
(I think she wanted to age into being a modern Millicent Fenwick, but with a walking stick instead of a pipe...)
