Have any student loans actually gotten forgiven?

Posted on 12/01/2024 12:04:15 PM PST by SamAdams76

Politics were not discussed during my recent Thanksgiving dinner with family. The closest we came to it, as the wine was poured and the meat, stuffing, and sweet potato came around the table was a question by an elder family member with regard to whether or not some younger members of our family, who recently went to college, actually had their student loans forgiven, as promised to them by the now mostly forgotten and illegitimate Biden Administration.

The innocent, or perhaps pointed, query was met with dead silence by our younger family members, as the gravy boat and cranberry sauce came around. So the conversation quickly moved on to less volatile topics such as whether or not the border collie is a more superior dog than the golden retriever (I incline to border collies being the better of the aforementioned dog breeds).

Student loan forgiveness was supposed to be the signature accomplishment of the stillborn and illegitimate Biden Administration. Despite the unconstitutionality of the U.S. government forgiving personal debt (and thus having the taxpayers, many of which never went to college themselves, assuming it), this magnanimous gesture was designed to drive young voters to the polls en masse in support of the Democrat ticket. Even if that ticket consisted of the intellectually challenged Kamala Harris and her Radio City Rockette in training running mate Jim Walz.

So what happened? Did these students, many of which now make lattes at Starbucks, get made whole or not on their student loans for their degrees in gender studies?

I was super polite at the Thanksgiving dinner so did not press the point raised.

“I have a suspicion that maybe they have a political list ;-)”

You mean like FEMA helping only Kamala supporters? I’d like to see a list of the states with the most loans forgiven. Perhaps they were blue states?

“The US Army paid for my tuition.”

USAF GI bill paid half of mine and My employer Boeing
paid the last of my schooling.
So I earned my way through school while working full time and raising a family.
I have a Computer science degree, that is a STEM degree for you arts majors.
I have little respect for people that get arts degrees and then complain about the cost.
I helped fight a war(Vietnam), helped build and design many of the Boeing aircraft you fly in, How many artists, lawyers, and psychologists can say that?
Y’all have done squat except suck off us people that produce things or services that are hard to produce.

In the old days, I assumed student loans from my undergrad studies at MIT. My graduate work at Harvard was covered by an NSF Fellowship.

My student loans were forgiven—a bit at a time—by my university teaching. Any kind of teaching, including K though 12, would have the same result. Eventually, I had no more student loan debt.

It seems that the same provision exists today.

"The US Army paid for my tuition. All I had to give them in return was possibly my life."

You so earned it as so many have not. Thanks for your service, Sir.

Getting a low interest rate from private lenders isn’t a given unfortunately.

BTW art matters. But society must reembrace beauty and not a banana taped to a wall.

“…so how’s Starbucks workin out for you?”

It’s been my observation that people with what I’d consider unemployable degrees end up working in HR. Seriously. And that results in policies that should not be there. I was accused of sexual harassment even though the woman in question said there was no harassment. The rule was, if an uninvolved third party thinks there’s harassment, then by definition there is harassment. In my case the third party thought that other people might have perceived it as harassment even though my accuser didn’t think it was harassment. (That would be a non-existent fourth party in my case.) All of this was in a gobbledygook policy written by an HR person with a degree in something like “Intersectionality.” I was saved by sending a copy of the policy to the legal department with an explanation of how it would open them up to unbounded risks. The legal department quashed it, but I ended up with a letter in my file. Thiry years of good service marred by absolute stupidity. Nobody is safe.

Millions of STEM degrees were forgiven. My wife’s graduate degree was forgiven. Shocked her. She didn’t think she fell into any special group being forgiven.

promises loan forgiveness to public-sector workers – like teachers and nurses – after they've made 10 years

\/

i know such a person who then worked with CPS

and iirc, they said it hasnt been forgiven yet

if thats true or not i dont know

but they acted like they got betrayed and were pretty bitter sounding about it.

Yeah, several billion dollars worth if I recall.

They were forgiven for people who paid fraudulent colleges/unis and for people who have paid for ten years but who worked as first responders or other public jobs.

The rank and file people did not.

I paid for my BSEE myself, going to community college and then a State University. On a continuing education program. Eff these moochers. Reinstate all loans. They can eat Ramen until the loans are paid.

There were specific diploma mills that royally screwed over the students. I have a friend who had a PhD or Doctorate of Business and proudly listed his Doctorate on his business and business cards. All the degrees were wiped out when the university ended up in court. Technically, he has a diploma, but it may as well have come from the Wizard of Oz. He used his military TA and VA benefits but borrowed funds via student loans for books, etc. His debt was not massive and was forgiven along with many others. But that was because of the fraud perpetrated by the university, as I understand it. People who borrowed for a Bull Sheet degree and are now working in retail and are managed by a high school student did it to themselves and need to repay the loan.

I paid off my kid’s student loans they took without telling me and a nephew’s, $12,000 which he filed bankruptcy instead of paying me back. And, no, none of them offered to help me when I lost everything in Almeda fire.

I’m fortunate enough to know several fabulous lawyers who actually care about the law, doing the right thing, and protecting their clients.

He’s already been promoted and got a merit bonus. After his next promotion, they will sponsor his attendance at law school.

I had $50,000+ in Parent Plus loans that I had taken out for my two kids. Mine were forgiven last year.

They weren’t “forgiven.” Other people are paying for them.
