BUFFALO, N.Y. – Paralyzing amounts of snow are continuing to smother towns along the eastern shores of the Great Lakes as a record-breaking lake-effect snowstorm blasts the region, prompting major road closures and travel bans.

As of Sunday, snowfall totals have exceeded 3 feet downwind of Lake Erie in parts of northwestern Pennsylvania’s Erie County and western New York south of Buffalo and downwind of Lake Ontario in northern New York, and an additional 1-2 feet of snow is possible before the storm begins to wind down.

With snow falling between 1 and 4 inches an hour, accumulations overwhelmed efforts to keep roads clear under the heaviest bands.

It happens literally every year.

The Great Lakes are still “warm” in early winter, and a quick-moving cold front passing over them will pick up a lot of moisture.

It just so happens a neighbor has a sister in town from Buffalo right now.

I asked her about it this morning......she says the heavy stuff is only in part of the city and the rest is normal.

Been there. Done that. Believe it or not, those snow-makers feel warm compared with weather in February.

In Wisconsin I have seen 6 inches of snow in one part of Milwaukee and only a trace a 1/4 mile away. Those lake squalls are amazing.

Paralyzing?

Maybe instead of the water it’s frozen puffer-fish toxin.

You are absolutely correct. My mind is playing tricks on me when it recalls my Trick or Treating in snowstorms in Ithaca, NY back in the 60s. In reality, Ithaca was actually a balmy and sunny 72 degrees year round. It was so nice in Ithaca that I’m not sure why I left that for California.

There is no snow. Al Gore told us there would be no more snow over 20 years ago.

Big LOL here -- I live in Ithaca.

We don't have anything on the ground at the moment, nothing coming down, and at most a couple inches in the forecast for later this week. All that nasty lake effect is north-west of us.

It is definitely cold, 25F-30F or so. And your mind is NOT playing tricks, I've seen snow here by Halloween before, and almost always by Thanksgiving (like this year).

I hope you're enjoying California!

40” of snow? Hmmmm

In my corner of Arizona for the next week or so they’re calling for dry, mid sixties, sunny, cobalt blue skies with gentle breezes.

Occasionally I’ll look in my freezer to get some of that cold weather experience.

“I hope you’re enjoying California!”

Oops, didn’t mean to insult Ithaca! I enjoyed growing up there, even when we were trick or treating in the snow. We had a great neighbor lady who would always invite us in to have hot cider and doughnuts when it was nasty out on Halloween.

I enjoy CA even with all the lunacy here. My wife hates the liberal lunacy so much in CA that she rarely comes back here from our place in North Idaho (she’s a native-born Californian, too!). She came down for three weeks to help down-size the CA homestead and we had a nice Thanksgiving dinner with our daughter and her fiancé in the Bay Area. We are driving back to Idaho in a couple of days, back to the same temps you are having in Ithaca. All of our ski resorts are open already, so it’s shaping up to be a good ski year.

Happy Thanksgiving! So much to be thankful for this year, isn’t there?
