Electric avenue: LA getting car-charging road ahead of 2028 Olympics (only 6.19 years left)
NY Post ^ | 11/30/24 | Chris Harris

California is about to become home to the nation’s second electric vehicle-charging roadway — with construction due to be completed ahead of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The multimillion dollar UCLA project, funded with state grant moneys, will concentrate on a half-mile stretch of road in Westwood, according to the Los Angeles Times.

And it will come as the university prepares to host the Olympic Village — where all of the competing athletes stay during the games.

“A wireless inductive option is a game changer,” Clinton Bench, director of the UCLA Fleet and Transit, told the Times.

“When a vehicle is driving over [a charger], the vehicle can collect charge while it’s moving.”

Close to $20 million in grant money will be used to upgrade UCLA‘s bus fleet, replacing gas-powered vehicles with electric buses.

The EV-charging roadway will eliminate the need to connect any of the buses to electric charging coils.

Any electric vehicle that utilizes the roadway will be able to pick up a charge, thanks to several underground charging stations.

The buses would pick up charge while driving throughout the day or when parked at a stationary wireless charger.

“In other words, the charge controller can’t be accepting a charge to charge the EV while the EV is on and taking out power from the battery.”

You better let Musk know that ...

“If you drive the other way, does your electric bus re-charge the road?”

You would probably have a head-on collision.

“Welcome to the 21st century.”

A hundred years ago you would be saying “Welcome to the 20th century”.

What is your point in putting up a photo of a bombed diesel truck?

Due to our reserved vehicle not on the lot, the rental company provided us with a CRV hybrid. 38 MPG for a week of mixed driving. It was a little intertaining watching the battery charge/discharge as needed.

From your source: Gas car fires are 10x more likely than Tesla fires.

That must be why you bought a Tesla. Good for you!

"There is no question that the efficiency of a wireless charging process is lower than with a direct connection."

Plug-in charging is not 100% efficient. Energy loss, primarily in the form of heat, occurs every step of the way from grid to battery. What’s more, regardless of the brand, a plug-in EV charger is made of many components, any one of which may be more or less efficient than similar components in another charger. So, the “efficiency” of the transfer of energy from the grid all the way to battery encompasses a range; a typical Level 2 home charger operates in the range of about 83-94% efficiency grid-to-battery depending on which one you buy. https://witricity.com/media/blog/what-is-efficiency-how-do-you-measure-it-and-why-should-you-care

“I don’t think there any EV autos that have wireless charging as a standard feature. From what I can tell, it is all after market tinkering if an EV has the capability.”

I never bought a Tesla. I did buy some Tesla stock.

“My comment was on the charge controller built inside the EV. In other words, the charge controller can’t be accepting a charge to charge the EV while the EV is on and taking out power from theelectricity.

Nothing new.

Just like your 12v battery.

If your charge is larger than the draw, it will charge your battery. It it is less it will be compensated by the battery.

Also functions like regenerative braking where motion is converted to electriciy.

The hybrid works similarly. Just carries its own charger.

My original comment wasn’t to say that wireless charging while driving CAN’T be done, but that most current EV’s can’t, even with a mod. We’re talking about changing the way underlying charge controller to be bi-directional.

***********************************

Those cars may be capable of adding a wireless charging system, but it doesn’t appear to be a standard OEM option for those vehicles, nor a OEM optional option. The Tesla Cybertruck has an access port to plug in a wireless receiver. I would assume they have some mounting holes available for installing one. Tesla is working on their own wireless charging system, but it isn’t available yet.
