Went to a Friendsgiving Friday night. They played the movie “Thanksgiving” afterwards. So gory.

It’s a movie. Take it easy :)

Kids wont see it if they have real paretns so it shouldn’t matter.

BTW, MANY childrens’ classics have horrific ending except in the US where we try to pretend that the world is all sunshine and roses to our children.

A curious group of friends sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the “Sailor Man,” who is said to haunt the factory and local docks.

Why not? All the best horror comes from left field. And it’s not like they’re forcing you to watch it. So if you don’t like it that’s OK too.

Christmas horror movies are the best. And it doesn’t seem to stop boring normal Christmas movies being made, so nothing is destroyed.

Of course this is totally not Hollywood. This is 4 tiny independent movie studios co-producing.

It's a movie. Take it easy :)

No. I don't think I will. I think that this is a sign of something having gone really wrong in the collective consciousness of culture.

Kids wont see it if they have real paretns so it shouldn't matter.

Actually they will. Or they will at least see trailers and posters and all that stuff. And that is enough.

BTW, MANY childrens’ classics have horrific ending except in the US where we try to pretend that the world is all sunshine and roses to our children.

You do not seem to understand the difference between a "scary story" which was what the original fairy tales were and horror. Scary stories are to teach you that there is evil in the world and evil can be defeated at great cost. Horror is pointless because the evil can not be defeated and just keeps coming back again and again and again. There is no use trying. Just lay down and die. This trend started sometime in the seventies and it has just gotten worse, more pointless and of course more gory.

If people want to make create this kind of story, their business but when they do it with things meant for children there is something more at work there. Aside from a total lack of creativity I mean.

Where do you think the terrible changes in the American people comes from and that we see as each generation is broken down in character and personality, culture, tradition and history, and faith more than the one before it, Hollywood is probably the most effective in propaganda and reshaping, especially of the young.

Aside from a total lack of creativity I mean.

This film is actually the first of two (that I know of) horror movies featuring Popeye. There is another one coming called Shiver Me Timbers.

I posted this in part because I wanted to see what kind of outrage there would be at the notion of a beloved cartoon character being turned into something darker. I was not wrong in what I estimated the reaction to be. And I agree with it, to be honest.

Public domain is destroying my childhood.

Betty Boop enters public domain next year. God only knows what THAT will be like.

I find the lack of creativity annoying.

I find the desire to make something that is for children into evil sinister.

The sounds of a child's laughter is used to signal that there is terror on the way. A child's toy is murderous. Kids who are polite, respectful and well spoken are out to kill in horrific ways. Tropes that have become so established in the public psyche that we do not even think about them any more. They just are.

And it has begun to bother me lately.

Maybe I am over reacting. But there is just something wrong with all of this.

Wrong direction. Hollywood almost always follows, it doesn’t lead. This is a fine example people have been spoofing, mocking, and just generally poking at these old properties for DECADES. But they had to keep it enough layers removed to not get sued by copyright holders. And even now that they’re public domain, these are not Hollywood movies, these are small indie movie studios. Hollywood is still a long way from doing this.

Hollywood does, regardless of where they get their ideas, they have there own ideas and goals (see Disney), and what they do is the most effective propaganda and shaping of the young of all next to the 12 years of school.

Hollywood does NOT take risks. Especially not the big dogs. Again this is NOT a Hollywood movie. And I don’t see this horror version of now publicly domain things gaining traction in Hollywood for years. For one thing Hollywood doesn’t generally like horror, 99% of the horror films made every year are indie. And also nobody has made anywhere near the kind of money on this thing (which has actually been around for a while outside America where copyright actually expires) to make Hollywood take notice. At least 2 or 3 of these movies will have to clear $100 million before Hollywood tepidly dips their toes in that water.

“”””Hollywood does NOT take risks.”””””

That is pure nonsense, they throw away billions for the purpose of indoctrinating people and to promote political messages and historical rewrites that they know will turn many off, and that some money losing movies will become accepted history in the public minds and will even show up in classrooms, and I don’t know what profit has to do with my posts anyway, I’m pointing out that it is destructive.

Making Christmas the major source (and cause) for movie horror can be profitable but is destructive to our culture and to Christmas.

It’s not. You just don’t see the reality of it. Profit has EVERYTHING to do with your post. Because it proves you have no point.

Again we run into the issue that Hollywood makes basically NO horror movies. So Christmas horror movies are NOT made by Hollywood.

See you run into the same basic problem all the people on FR that complain about Hollywood run into. You think Hollywood is synonymous with the entire movie industry. It is not. Hollywood is half a dozen major studios that are risk averse and create primarily franchise movies from “proven” properties. They have no interest in horror, they have no interest in trying anything new, they have no interest in most of what you complain about. They only make safe bets for money.

Popeye the Slayer Man is NOT a Hollywood movie. Silent Night Deadly Night is NOT a Hollywood movie. 90% of everything you complain about is NOT produced by Hollywood. So by blaming Hollywood for all this you are really just showing you know nothing about the movie business and who makes what.

LOL, Yes I use Hollywood as a general term for the movie making industry, and the deliberate decay is a part of the industry and of whatever the official Hollywood portion of it is.

You clearly are missing the whole point, seemingly on purpose.
